Thank but no thanks mate. I wouldn't know how to clean the chainsaw bar oil out of it.

I dont really think the flat panel filters are suited to dusty work as the paper filters dont usually have the wire mesh to hold them together. The barel type filters however, always seem to have a sleave through the middle to stop them collapsing.

If you are pulling such a vacuum that you need a reinforced filter, then something is very wrong.

    Hi

I have heard that LPG equipped P38's do well with the D2 airbox, I wonder if that is related to the hiclone?

    Yep, I said it. Hiclone...
As others have said the Disco 2 comes with a Hi-Clone like stationary fan from factory. I have already hacket the bottom of the air box (yes it holds water) but I left the Hi-Clone doover in place. I'll take it out and see if it makes a differance to the spread of dust on the filter.

I suspect the stories may have been born from those that did not follow the instructions to the letter. The K&N filter oil and clearner kits are about $20. Thats probably pretty expensive given that you could clean it with petrol and oil it with what ever other oil you might choose. You can even buy spray filter oil for about $10 but it's designed for foam filters.

I have never had a problem and I'd expect the first place I'd see some residue would be the inside of the lid of the filter box but mine is spot less clean just like it was when I put the filter in.

My WRX had 168,000km on it when I sold it and the intake past the filter was as clean as the day I bought it new. I couldnt say the same for the Disco with the paper filter even when I cleaned as far as the turbo everytime I replaced the paper filter.

    Happy Days.

I think this is a big problem with the K&N filters is not everyone spends the time to service them properly. it is a time consuming thing when you can just throw a paper filter in the bin and install the new one.

I clean the K&N at in the evening when I know I wont be driving anymore that day. Then it has all night to dry before I oil it before breaky in the morning and the solvent has time to dry and the oil has time to disperse in the filter.

My K&N replaced a unifilter that slowly fell apart, i used the correct oil on it as i use the correct oil on the K&N[not chain bar oil?], with the unifilter i kept findind little holes like burn marks and according to unifilter that is caused by my engine back firing-300tdi? in the end i was cleaning it again and it just fell apart, K&Ns been in for 5 years or so and im not trying to justify my purchase and have no regrets

Do any of these reportedly badly sealing filter boxes have a safety filter?
With a safety filter it wouldn't be too dangerous to test different main filters. No, I am not offering my Isuzu for testing...
I quite like the Series oil bath filter, it gurgles nicely if you overfill it

    Safety Filter?

Do you mean a filter after the main filter? I wish but I don't think there would be enough space. I'd like to replace the main filter with something better but it would take some work to fit it all up and adapt it to my snorkel.
