Perentie - Tubeless Tyres

It perhaps ought to be pointed out that the rim with a safety bead was invented about twenty years after tubeless tyres came into use and was (and probably is) used widely for tubed tyres, so referring to a rim without such a bead as a "tubed" rim and one with as "tubeless" is hardly accurate.

Hi all, I also understood that the tube type rim was riveted to the centre and that the rivets were not guaranteed air tight, hence the need for tubes. If that is the case, would some sort of sealant like Tyre Slime or Fix-a-flat solve the problem of air leakage or would it create more problems? Cheers, 130man.

Some rims are rivetted, some are welded. I have no experience of sealants with them, but I assume they would work. The only downside is that you are unlikely to be very popular with the next tyre fitter to change a tyre on that rim.

Does this include the landrover rims marked with "tubed" or "tubeless"?:angel:

Of course not - but none of the 25 or so Landrover rims I have have these marks.

I have four sets of rangie and disco alloys. All the double hump rims are marked "tubeless".
The set without "tubeless" not only are missing the second bead, but they have a size of valve hole that doesn't fit common tubeless valve-stems.

I carry tubes for emergencies when on trips away and my series vehicles all run tubes. Either Bridgestone or Michelin tubes only and these are available if you order them.

Are the ribs on the inside of most tubeless tyres an issue when running tubes?

Yep, they certainly are, wear holes in the tubes eventually especially if you are running low pressures and the tyres are flexing a fair bit. Not as much of a problem when running higher pressures. Running tubeless is the best way to go and carry a spare tube or two and a patch kit for emergencies when in remote areas.

You can get the fatter tubeless valve stems from tyre shops to fit the tube type rims on Landrovers.
