I'll defiantly have to look into the LPG conversion then and I'm on my L's at the moment and always drive it not sure how I'll go with insurance but its not worth much anyway and I'm not bothered to Much with scratches and small amounts of panel damage also I'm getting into the fabrication trade when I leave school so I might the bar work I can do is endless
no one has mentioned that simple gearing changes will make the tdi a good performer, even on 35's.
4.3:1 diff gears, uprated centres and axles, cv's etc will allow that little but simple, reliable and easy to work on engine to perform properly.
worth considering.

buy either a v8 or tdi disco and put a Isuzu 4bd1t in it, best diesel engine you could put in a disco
Look LPG would be your best option. A lot is to do with money. If you are getting the V8 for free it will take you many years to recoup the difference in changing the engine or buying a tdi or TD5. Even LPG may be costly with the kit and the cost of LPG at present. When I had my RR it was worth it, but not sure now.
If you valued the Disco at say $4k and you are being given it that is a lot of fuel, say $5k to do a decent tdi conversion or buy one, still a lot of difference between the cost of buying vs being given and still have to pay for diesel and the difference in price and economy. Remember diesel in Perth is on average 20c per litre dearer than ULP.
The V8 economy is not that bad, a lot would depend how you drive it. Is it a 5spd manual or auto?
You can do some basic economy driving such as sit on 100kmph on the freeway or highways, stay 5 - 10kmph under speed limits (may annoy other drivers) dont accelerate hard. Make the engine breath a bit better with a decent exhaust.
Ha!!! Dougal... is that a challenge?? :D. Tonnny, there are lots of engines that can be made to fit... Depends on your time and skill levels. Yes, the 200 and 300 Tdi will fit easily and can be tuned/played with to go very well. Big 4's like the Isuzu lump are great but produce very course torque and like to break boxes and shafts if used with a heavy foot. Talk to the guys in the Isuzu section, as they are a good gutsy engine tho. Diesel 6 pots sound great, have smooth torque delivery but involve quite a bit of work to fit.. Your options would be the Nissan 6's starting with the revvy 2.8 which was underpowered in a Patrol, the SD33 which is dated now, but cheep, the TD42 which is pricy if good and would need a strong box to cope, or the Cummins....!!!!! Big power, big torque and a lot of work!!! Just see my thread "Monster diesel into a 101" in the military section! The Nissans would be my choice for a modified disco (but remember they are indirect injection so require a lot more fuel, big intercoolers and turbos to get them to move well). Td5's are about in crashed rigs, and if used with a Defender ECU are not that hard to fit. Once you know them they are a good simple engine. Do your homework, ask lots of questions, use a tape measure and you'll find something you like! Remember, you can spend a lot for very little when the Tdi would prob do all you need. :)Quote:
