    3.9 V8 auto to 300tdi parts required?

    Hi Guys.

I'm sure this has been done many times. But if you want to swap a 3.9 V8 auto for a 300tdi in a classic rangie, how many major parts are required?

    Presuming:
    Engine mounts
    Auto bellhousing.
    Torque converter.
    Radiator/Intercooler.

Then just a hundred other bits and pieces (air-cleaner, fuel lines, etc etc)?

Or is this prohibitive enough that it's worth importing 300tdi with gearbox and transfer complete?

I'm told the shift points in the V8 trans are significantly different to the diesel, may not matter if you shift manually. The kick down cable may be different.

The fuel tank just needs the pickup assembly modded to remove the EFI pump, the fuel lines should work just fine.

Air cleaner is very similar, you should be able to adapt the 300tdi intake hose to your existing box.

Chassis mounts for the engine are the critical bits, I'm sure you'll find someone to cut off a set for you.

Wiring is just a case of ditching the EFI loom, running the ignition coil +ve to the stop solenoid, and extending the starter, oil pressure and alternator wires to suit.

I did read that. But that would mean another vehicle and I'm already out of space.
The last rolled disco I found was done properly. Ripped apart trailing arms, bent diff housing and someone already got the engine out.

The body in thinking of is 85 rrc with the long stick gear position. Originally lt77. Would a defender driveline put the gear lever back through the original hole? I much prefer manual, but if I could make auto work it's fewer parts to buy.

    It's a complicated plan.

Plan just got more complicated. Found a 300tdi soft-dash. So that is either all the diesel-auto conversion bits I need or a good start on a manual.

    Can a 300tdi be mated to a long-stick (i.e. 1985) LT77?

There is very little difference between the 200tdi and 300tdi bellhousing patterns (1 bolt or so). Ashcroft may also be able to sell you a 300tdi to LT77 belhousing.

Otherwise pendy on pirate has a lot of experi8ence modifying V8 ZF autos to work with tdis.

Thanks. I think I've found the 300 and 200 mounts are in a different place also. The auto may be the easiest option, cost to modify an lt77 or source a defender r380 will likely be prohibitive.

200Tdi engine mounts are in the same place as a series. 300tdi are further rearward, however the 300 block retains the LHS mount bosses in the 200 position. RHS mount would need to be custom if you wanted to use 200 chassis mount locations.

So how much work and cost for a head replacement on a 300Tdi?
Looks like previous owner didn't know about the radiator or what should never been in it!

Last time I bought one ~300GBP for a new complete head from paddocks.
