Many thanks for those "happy snaps" although thinking about it I actually wish I hadn't seen them!

It now seems likely that when the plug on the thermostat housing (on mine) failed, the rapid but brief over heat may have caused similar cracking.

Strangely though, whilst it has been bubbling for a few years (that I have noticed) the coolant hardly goes down nor does the system over pressurise.
It also always takes a few km. to come up to temp. but then never varies above from just under the 1/2 way mark.

I expect only time will tell..........

I got my head from Landy Imports Australia up near Newcastle, NSW, delivered in 2 days, head fully disassembled so as I could lap in the valves and check spring heights and tension, came with top quality steel shim head gasket and bolts.
Blokes name is Rick, also bought a turbo off him, money stays in Australia and if something ****s up I can go visit him, BTW same head that Turners sell at around same price, regards Frank.

The head that I swapped out recently with the new one, (see above post) had cracks in the combustion area between the valves and around glow plug holes and injector holes, it still ran on for another 3 years. As part of the port and polish I slightly chamfered around these holes with my air grinder with the roll drum sander and a very small emery flap wheel also any sharp areas around the valve seats, must be careful not to slip onto the valve seat inserts. I usually put the old valves in the holes to avoid damage, Regards Frank.

    d2 blown head gasket

Hi mine started by splitting the header tank. I thought it was age related as there was no oil in water or visa verse. But then while towing it overheated and that was that. I stripped it myself and had the head crack tested, skimmed and all valve seats checked only cost $200 then fitted new head gasket and head bolts. Been good since then.
