[QUOTE=Bushy049;2091011]Wow this is getting a too technical now, poor bloke just wanted advise on mounting his auto tunner.

Yep been having a bit of a chuckle to myself as I've watched this thread go mad. I can see that what to me is something extra to carry in case of emergency, is for others a passion in itself, there seems to be a whole world in this radio stuff that I have no idea about.
I'm really curious about the LDG tuner and stainless steel whip, if it is an effective option, why do most people use such expensive auto-tuning antennas? Is it more complicated to use once installed?

I ended with a Codan 9323 and auto tune 9350. I mounted the autotune on a fabricated bracket above the rear light panel on the 130 HCPU tub. I had a folding mount in their originally, but it rattled, so got rid of it. Just had to buy new house with a bigger garage!

Hi Andrew, looks like a well made setup. Your antenna base sits about the same height above your canopy as my moonraker would if I mount it at the bottom of my rear bar, I'd be worried about it being snapped off or damaged by overhead obstacles. Have you had any issues with that?

Here my mount for the disco owners out there. Made a bracket up and welded it to the spare wheel mount. Cheap and easy. I was able to get the coax and control cable through the existing grommets inside the door. I have to shorten the mount now as it was originally made up for a shorter auto tunner, that has since been upgraded. Was glad to get it off the bull bar and now when the missus takes photos on the road they don't have a massive black auto tunner in them.

Yep I have a couple of mates that live and breath hf, they are very handy to have around. And when I'm out bush I'm never alone. I always put a message on our club face book page when heading out somone always calls me up while I'm out it a nice feeling. But yes I do wonder about a tunner box, but fortunately iv only ever paid $500 for either of my auto tunner antennas.

This is my portable setup that gets setup as a campsite radio or lent to friends when travelling. It's got batts for emergencies but you don't get a huge amount of time out of them enough to make a call and get yourself out of trouble. It also got a set of leads with clamps and a mini Anderson plug for plugging into the camper trailer.

    HI POD

No issues with the height...My truck is not designed for shopping centres so stay will clear of these.

I only attached the whip antenna part when out on the open road, or when parked at a camp spot.

    Cheers

Made the bracket yesterday arvo, attached to my main spare wheel carrier (I mounted the second spare carrier whilst I had this one off, only carry 2 spares when travelling). All earthed back to the chassis with battery cable. I'll carry my antenna stowed, mount it to this when I want to use it.
If I get a bit more time before we head north this year, I'll make a folding mount, but that's looking pretty unlikely at this stage.

Wow. This thread may have gone way OT at times, but it's been brilliant reading, and there have been some great links posted as well. Thanks all. I've learnt heaps.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is the need for a licence. Is one still required for HF?

Edit: Never mind, I've worked it out.
