Towing With an A-Frame
Boy will this test some of you guy's!!!! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]
I've just picked up and A-Frame for my S11A, I plan to A_Frame the S11a
behind the Disco? Has anyone got any thought's?
A mate is currently A-Framing his S11 behind his 130. I believe the concept is still the same, no sharp U-turns 8O no tight right hander's etc :? So all advice would be welcome, I have had experience in the Army but my concerns are wil the 300tdi cope? :?

8) i'm sure it will cope, but a frame towing is really hard on the tyres and what you join the frame to.
and i'm not sure its legal either

Down here in Sth Aus we see a number of Earthmovers with Aframes towing Tojo's or L300 Van's? So the lagalities of it here in South Aus must be different? My mate has A-framed his S11 a number of times 400 500 klm to Land Rover events, so I'd be interested to here from other member's regarding the legalities?

The legal thing might be that earthmovers arn't driven as fast as Landies. See the same thing with headers towing caravans, utes and trailers around cropping areas in harvest periods. However their best is 30ks/hr, you'll be doing at least double that with an unbraked "trailer", whereas
heavy machinery has a weight advantage over the towed you might not. Oz has differing state towing requirements unless that's changed (again!) so you might be able to A frame legally in Sth Oz. Wish they'd make a standard system rather than be legal in NSW but get ticketed in Qld for being over laden or speeding for example.
As a suggestion a better option might be a dolly, like the towies use and would be as safe as the A Frame however might be more legal wider than Sth Oz. With a dolly you pick up an extra set of brakes so you have six (tow vehicles 4 + two on the dolly axle) opposed to four (tow vehicle only) helping pull up the two and a half tonnes, which might make the difference in an emergency.

I flat towed my S2A 88" Gs from Cessnock to Corowa and back last year 03, I had no problems with the towing I had fitted extra long front shackle bolts (grade 8 Hi/tens) to the front of the 88" L/r. here in NSW you can tow a vehicle on a A frame but it must either be registered or rego through a recognised club and be on conditional plates, (not sure whether unrego/ towing permits available any more NSW).The other point is that the law states you must at all times have a licensed driver sitting in the vehicle being towed and they are supposed to steer and brake the towed vehicle. I kept my speed down to 85/90ks it made for a very long trip, on the rear of the Landrover (towed) it had a Aluminium sheet (3mm) which had lights turn signal and brake all connected to the trailer socket on my 110, I also had a Amber rotating beacon fitted into the R rear tac plate holder to warn appraoching drivers that we were travelling slower than they were I had a switch in the 110 to control this light. Now the only problems I've ever encountered with towing a vehicle on a A-Frame is that you have to be a smooth driver you can't throw the vehicle onto a corner R or L as it will swing the rear of the towing vehicle wildly and the chances of over correction are very real, the biggest NO NO is you cannot reverse it you will bend something badly, if you wanted to see pictures of any of this go to the remlr site and access the 2003 Corowa trip, cheers :? PS I believe in Sth Oz and Victoria you can tow a vehicle with no-one sitting in it but not in NSW as far as I know.
