Rear A Frame Ball Joint is playing up !!

    Hi all,
I suspect that my Rear A Frame Ball Joint is playing up, makes a bumping noise in the back of the car when I go over bumps in the road !! Anyway of checking to see if it is busted without removing it all ?

If it is busted what should I replace it with, saw this one at Snake Racing, looks pretty good :

Any other options ? Or should I go LR genuine !!

I asked the landy bloke at arb over here and he told me that they all clunk time to time and don't be suprised if there is up to a .25 of an inch movement.

My ball joint is totaled but I'm not going to worry about it.

The one on the site you listed is good just rember that they are a press fit and if you bugger the splines up in the a frame you looking at big bucks.

Arb quoted me about $400 to do the job

Graeme Cooper in Sydney do a similar adjustable balljoint for $165. So you can adjust out the play when it gets knackered and can be greased. See www.lrexpert.com.au

I fitted one of these balljoints to my Defender, it's a well made unit but it might even be the same thing as Snake Racing going by the pics.

    Matt,

I don't know if it's any help, but I just had one replaced on my County and it cost $50 in labour and $50 for the part (which was an original). It was making a horrid knocking noise over bumps as you have said and since having it repaired all is quiet again.

It has to be pressed on and the one that was on it had not been pressed on completely and therefore it's life span was shortened considerably.

He tested it with a crowbar 8O

Maxi - Drive in QLD make heavy duty adjustable, greaseable ones. Any play at all even a 1-2mm will cause noise on take off and bumps. I reckon they are stuffed at about 80k km on a road car. Another cause of noise over bumps on a Disco, is from new the top couple of coils (the ones that close up as part of the pressive rate) have a rubber cover to make them quiet, this splits and falls off and the spring make a noise as they close up.

I think Graeme's is from Maxi-drive, he's pretty well into most of his products.

I'm starting to think it's now more the front passenger shocker, going to have a look under the car tonight to be sure, just out of interest how hard is it to replace this shocker ? Will be doing it in the car port with a jack and car stands, is it worth it !!

I changed all 4 shocks on the disco and it took about 4 hours but mine were long travel h/duty koni's

Fronts take a bit longer as you have to move a few things like air filter etc

The bolt that holds the bottom of the shock is the most pain to ge to but thats about it really all you do then is take of the 4 bolts holding the cone in place and lift up once out take off top nut and remove the shock from the cone.

Changing the A Arm balljoint can be an easy job or can be rather more difficult, just depends on your luck. I recently chaged the joint in my Defender, which had been inplace for about 12 years. Fortunately I have access to a 50 ton hydraulic press. The balljoint only took 5 tons of pressure before it popped out. A couple of years ago I replace the same balljoint in my Disco (which was only in place for about 4 years) but that bugger took 26 tons before it finally gave way! 8O I'd hate to have had to get that one out with only a hammer and a selection of expletives to work with!
