    Rocker shafts

Pulled the rocker shafts apart today to clean then up and give them a check out, they are worn, do I bite the bullet and replace them and the arms as well for about $200 or do I risk it and use them... thoughts?

What is the priority of this rebuild:
-all stops pulled no expense spared better than solihul
-I want this reliable but budget is not limitless
    -get er running

IMHO that is significant wear and my guess is something has pooched the arm running on the surface in that second picture. Either blocked gallery, wrong oil, wrong moon phase?
That shaft does not look pretty (please dont re-use the arms or at the very least give them the once over and replace bushings)

Perhaps a good secondy if $ tight but personally unless this is a get er running job I would not use that shaft. If you cant find anything closer I have a shaft and a few arms with no real wear for a beer a smile + freight to the other side of this big red land.

I agree with roverrescue. I chucked out a pair of arms that looked better than that during my build.

The RV8 has the reputation for being able to run with lots of wear, but in this case, you've found it, so correct it.

    Thanks Gents,

I would say this buld is,

"I want this reliable but budget is not limitless" but saying that im going to all this trouble I dont really want to scrooge on either, im happy to buy new and recycle were I can.

Thanks for the offer Roverrescue , I think ill bite the bullet and get some new ones, cant hurt and that way ill know there ok when I put it back together, I happened upon another complete 3.5 that ill be picking up tomorrow ill also have a look at them see what condition there in.

What would you hear while the engine is running with wear like this on the rocker arms, would it be very obvious that something was not right or simply a silent killer.

Someone has rebuilt this before, not sure of there level of expertise but some things were done ok and some things like this were overlooked.

    Good score

I will go with wrong moon phase for shaft wear. My green disco was in excellent condition bores/camshaft/pushrods/lifters all good but the rocker shafts were cactus, worse than yours. All the oil feeds were clear including the pedestals and the rocker shaft itself. When I did the head gasket on my white disco over Christmas it was the filthiest engine I have come across in a long time. The rocker shafts showed minimal wear despite the oil feeds in the rocker shafts, pedestals and rockers being 99% blocked. The attached photo is a rocker shaft from my green disco, the corrosion is from sitting in my scrap bin for three years.

Yeah Dave bargain, it actually started at 99c so I popped a bid on it of quite a bit and let it run, it reached 26 bucks, of course it could be a boat anchor when I get it apart but hey you never know.
