Question about AP60 cruise control or speed pulse generator

Reading an installation manual for the AP60 cruise control kit, the instructions show to use magnets positioned on tailshaft or use an optional
speed pulse generator !!! See pic below.

Now, I dont really like that magnet idea so does a 3.5 efi v8 have a speed pulse generator already ?
If not where would I get one and where would I fit it ?

    Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it was an AP60 I fitted to my '86 RRC.

I had no problems with the magnets on the tailshaft.

The cruise control worked very well.

    Thanks Ron.
I think that the speed sensor option would be much easier option to install.

I have just ckecked the Rave CD and came up with little thingy. See pic.

If I tapped into this gadget would it do the job connected to the AP60 ?

There isn't generally a problem with fitting a magnet based speed sensor to the drive shaft. Generally I would fit the pickup and its bracket to the transmission and the magnet as close to the transfer case end as possible, on the front shaft. That way flex won't knock the magnet off. They work with around 6mm air gap.

I also believe the AP60 wouldn't have the ability to work with a higher pulse rate than a single magnet as it has limited adjustment. The higher level models of cruise control will work off any speedo transducer and are better suited to vehicles that already have one.

    Thanks.
I guess it would be safer to just fit the magnet to the front shaft as you suggest.

The sensor in the pic from Rave is supposed to work with the Disco's fitted with cruise control but I dont know anything about their units.

Then again, I wonder what type of speed pulse generator they are refering to in the AP60 instalation manual and how it differs from the one fitted to the Disco's.
The one from Rave that I posted is from the v8 section.

I will see what the Haynes says if anything.

A friend with a Patrol TD42 fitted an AP60 and used the VSS feed to the speedo successfully...

Cant see why it would not work for you - But no guarantees

All the 14CUX RRCs and Discos 1s have a VSS, as it has functions for the ECU as well as the speedo.
    This is all 3.9 RRCs,3.9 D1s and I think 3.5 D1s.
The RRC has a short cable with the VSS on the LH chassis rail, but AFAIK the D1s are on the transfer case. Dunno why.
