Sounds like a lash cap on top of the valve has worn out. Take tappet cover off and check the clearance on the valves or visually look.

I have a 1997 se7 discovery with a 300tdi diesel engine with manual transmission, the disco has 280,000kms on the clock. The engine has started making an "chuffing" sound when ticking over. I have researched the net and the following link is exactly the same sound it is making.

It has also caused the idle to be more lumpy, timing belt was done approx 30,000kms ago, i have just replaced the injectors with a new set from the UK and i am 100% certain there is no compression leak where the injectors seal into the head. Engine is regularly serviced every 10,00kms.The way the car drives is the same as it was before all this started, its just the noise and lumpy idle which is a little worrying.
I though id ask on here and see if anyone has come across the same sound and have a solution. My suspicion is a dodgy inlet valve. I have also heard that the vacuum pumps play up??

sticking (or holed) valve.
few reasons why it happens but thats what it is.
whip the rocker cover off and you'll see and hear which one it is.

Ok, i have got the rocker cover off and was about to check the valve clearances, doesnt sound like theres much point now. How will I determine which valve it is? i have the passenger wheel jacked up and turning it over via turning the wheel forward.
Did the valve adjustment and no better so stripped it all down today, just have to remove the rocker assy and remove all the headbolts and get the head down to the head re-conditioner on tuesday (all being well). Any tricks when putting it back together apart from cleaning all surfaces and correct head bolt tightening pattern/tensions? Do you need to replace the head bolts on the 300tdi or do they go again? Also, i see there are various head gasket types, which is the best or is the composite gasket the best choice?
if the head and deck are not perfect get the composite gasket and get the thickest one (ring MR automotive)
heads go again if they are ok
HEadbolts go again upto 5 times but I personally only use them 3 times (gives you 2 spare if you have a problem on the road)
use laminated card board folded in half glossy side out ontop of the head gasket as you lower the head on, jack the head up on some crdit card thick plastic wedges at the 4 corners as you pull the cardboard out.
Dont forget to place the rocker assy and rear headbolts in place in the back positions if its a disco.

got the head off and things aren't good under there. Piston closest to the front of the car has a chunk out of it on one side and the head is cracked on every cylinder. Engine will now require a full rebuild and a new head. Has anyone done this before? what sort of dollars should i expect? $1500 for a rebuild kit (inc head and gaskets), 1k for a turbo, $600 for rebuilders to rebore block etc, $500 for other bits and pieces, clutch, $4K approx?
the block is probably ok but that sounds like its done a belt or been cooked.
budget $6k to be safe.
(I just did it for $13K total but I also got a gearbox, tcase, clutch + radiator+ water pump+ lots of other attention to detail bits and had to do the head a second time after the old one let go.)

ive never cooked it or had it break a belt, that doesnt mean to say it hasnt happened before and been bodged and sold on by a previous owner! mind you, its lasted me over 3 years as it is. 6K is a lot of money to spend on the old girl though.
try, After dropping $5k on the turbo, cooling system and head so the normal driver can learn that no coolant isnt optional on the tdi300, dropping $13k so she can learn that oil is also not optional.
