Maxi Drive Axle upgrade

I recently had the Defender serviced, and they made the following comments:
1) Requires wheel bearing repack & front tub axle seals (recommend convert system to oil fed)
2) Rear axles and drive flange splines worn
3) Front caps worn slightly

They have recommended I go with a maxi-drive axle set up front and rear (apprently given the need to replace most of these parts in due course, the overall cost will be similar).

I know there are a number of people around here who have had this conversion / upgrade on their vehicles (I just can't remember who !)

How much does the maxi-drive axle upgrade cost ?
Any comments on the upgrade ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Its not cheap
There are cheaper options but more tech involved.

A rough price breakdown is as follows (note this is only axle upgrade and no lockers included its also supply only for the bits)

Front axle set and maxi carrier etc $1190
Rear axle set and maxi carrier etc $1180
Your current CW&P are to be used on the new maxi centre.
On top of this you will need (might not) the outer drive flanges for the front $285
SO roughly $2655ex $2920inclusive (supply only)

Note: this is from the top of my head for what it was for my range rover, also if your CVs are **** Maxi drive charge 1600 for a pair of AEU2522s 8O
Hence why I went to Sam at Haultech Engineering for my bootyfield CVs (speacially heat treated and welded ring on bell for superior strength)

If you are after replacment CW&P in the lower 4.11 ratio maxi drive charge about $1600 for the pair.

They charged me $350 for a standard 3.54 ratio CW&P just so you know (non genuine)

If you were to go a full on Maxi setup with lockers you should expect to pay around the 4500 mark aslong as you have the AUE2522 CVs, with out them your lookin more like $6100plus

Its alot of dollars, The toyota centre conversion with custom jacmac axles is far cheaper juts involve more tech work on both yours and the installed behalf

Graeme Cooper list the Defender rear Maxidrive axle upgrade for $678.65. This is complete, axles & drive flanges. The complete rear locker setup, with axles & drive flanges is $1532.00. Being a Salisbury rear, the cost is significantly less than the Rover front.

Also drive flanges alone are listed for $127.55.

All GST inc.

I priced a diff lock, axles and drive flanges about 6 mths ago for my 110.

As said earlier the cost was about $12 - 1300 for the rear, more for the front. They come as a kit and works out better value for money than buying a set of axle shafts and drive flanges alone.

The standard drive flanges on a defender are shorter than a county. Maxi drive sell two types for a defender. The cheaper one is shorter like the defender style. Spend the extra money and buy the larger more expensive type. These come with the diff lock kit.

However, you can very safely get away without maxidrive parts you don't go through much water and you are prepared to check your bearings once a year and repack them if necessary. Although I found the diff lock to be great on my previous 110. It was on the front and was great for pulling me out of slippery spots. I should have kept the front axle.

Vlad,
as your in Brisbane, why not drop into Maxidrive in Carrara and pick up a brochure and talk direct over the counter, that way your getting first hand info.
I phoned them and had a catalogue in a couple days over here in the west, they make a number of Landrover quality products.

2 questions then:
You mention the locker setup requires the AUE2522 CV's but you have the Haultech ones. Do the (cheaper) Haultech ones work with the maxidrive locker setup ?

Tell me more about this toyota centre conversion, I've not heard of it before but it sounds sacreligious. The main drawback I assume would be that the low ratio is lower (ie not as much reduction) as compared to the standard 3.54:1 ?
