Transmission strenght

I have a RR Dakar fitted with a Toyota 1UZ-FE (Lexus V8).

We are looking at supercharging and are just alittle concerned about the drivetrain.

The vehcile runs an LT77 gearbox and LT230 Transfer case. Rear axle is Rr with Maxidrive. Fron open RR. The front prop shaft is a solid :cat converter" shaft for clearance reasons.

Clutch is ceramic 2100kg clamping pressure.

Tyres are 12.5 x 15 (33's).

We expect power output to be 500hp plus.

The car is used as a fun convertible with minor 4x4 work.

What will fail first?

Wow, you've got some serious horsepower there. 8)

What will break first? Well my opinion is a toss up between the front axles (halfshafts) and CV's, or the LT77. If you're into rockhopping and bouce the front with that sort of hp, then CVs and halfshafts will become consumables, at least until you maxidrive/mcnamara/longfield it. If you can take care of the front end, then the LT77 is the next weakest link.

I wouldn't anticipate trouble with the LT230.

All just my opinion of course.

Anyone else have something to add here?

Sounds about right. I'd pick the cheapest part to replace and make that my weakest link because somethings gotta give.

The car is not used for rock crawling (or much else for that matter!) if it saw low range for 10 minutes a year it would be a lot.

The engine set-up we are working on is reputedly able to produce 800hp if we turn the boost up to 18-19lb.

Now 800 would see the whole driveline drop dead.

Of interest what transmission/driveline would you run to handle 500hp? As the car is going to be supercharged it will have enormous torque.

I would think a Tremec hooked up to LT230 running thru some exotic diffs. Lots of engineering but could be worth it.

Tremecs are strong. But remember it's torque that breaks stuff. A mate of mine runs a Tremec behind a blown 393 chev fitted to Jag E type, car is used hard for hillclimbs, historic street sprint etc. You could consider a GQ patrol box and transfer case.

They worth thinking about as well ?

swap in jag v12 engine mounts same hight as rover but larger.

Keep the LT230.

NV 4500 best optio n if you want manual.

Auto run the ZF with the V12 jag clutches in it.

swap in toy diff centres into rover axle housing run Jac Mac axles.

CV's longfiled Chromo .

best set up around.

Thanks for the comments. Greatly appreciated.

ShaunP,

I agree torque will do all the damage. An Auto would make more sense but I like driving it as a manual.

Hellspawn,

The car had tandem mounts all around as part of it's original build for the Safari. The rears are staying as built but the fronts needed total replacement.

HSVRangie,

I am usung custom mounts to squeeze the Lexus engine in. I am currently looking at the double mounts and trying to integrate the old tandem mount system

Now I will show my ignorance!

What is an NV4500 and what is it out of.

I understand the LT230 is pretty bulletproof.

I never realisd the ZF would carry the sort of power we are looking at.

You lost me on the diff centres. I think there may be a typo in there.

The CV's make sense.

Swap in Toyota Diff Centres.

Both HSV Rangie and Landy_Man have this set up, very strong.

NV4500

Hi zuffen,
Interesting vehicle you got there. Post some pics if you can for us.

The NV4500 that shaunp was refering to is made by New Venture. It was factory standard behind lots of Yankee 4wds. Very popular in the states. Tremec is another good box but 1st gear is too fast and is set up for 2wd vehicles mainly.

The following link shows a NV4500 installed in a Yankee defender behind a 6.5L Turbo diesel.

Good luck with your toy!!!
