    Discover 1 Headlight relay upgrade

Ok, so I am going to upgrade my headlight circuit to include a relay as i've burnt out another headlight/indicator stalk.

I've got 2 relays (High and low) and the wires and connectors. I started wiring it all up when I realised that where I was going to do it, would only pt the relay in line with one light, not the other one (I was putting it on the gap behind the expansion tank on the passanger side).

So i need to either do a 2nd set of relays on the other side, or run a line to the other headlight (will probably do this) and into the headlight connector in place of the 2 purple wires. Should there be any problem doing this and leaving the purple ones (power for high and low) on the drivers side disconnected?

Also, what is the white on into the headlight connector for, earth?

    Any other hints or tips?

Take the easy way out. Traxide on here has a relay kit. Two in fact, one for headlights alone and the other for headlights plus spotties. Not overly expensive, but price is nothing compared to an indicator stalk. Every few years...

Comes with a Big Fat RELIABLE relay and detailed, yet simple instructions. If you can't follow them...then seriously, - stick to the mechanical side!

No, I don't have one of his, installed my own setup from surplus relays etc. - But then again, 'Electrics' is an area of competancy for me.

I too bought Traxide relays, but did my own wiring. They are happy to sell you only what you need if you are handy with wiring. The relays are very nice, and have one for my driving lights and main lights. They are a fused twin relay - the driving lights can use one circuit per side, the main lights have one circuit for low beam and one for high. If you do your own, replace the wires right up to the plug on the lights - its incredibly tiny wiring that Land Rover used, and to think it goes through the switch too.
Before I did this, you could feel the heat coming out of the cover on the left of the steering column on a night drive. One time I drove home from SA to VIC with low beam only after the switch had s##t itself at the border after getting too hot one time too many. Never again.

    The way I done mine....

4 x relays mounted on RH inner guard, low, high, spotties, light bar.
4mm wire to RH headlight, 5mm to LH headlight....new connectors for lights.
    Triggered off original headlight wiring.
Old headlight wiring/plugs left in place, can swap plugs over and back to standard if needed.

Voltage at globe with engine running....
    std 11.5v
    with relays and wiring 13.5v
alternator was only charging at 13.8v at that time and has since been replaced, so it may now be a bit higher.

Makes a noticeable difference, even with std 55/60 globes
