Brilliant - unscrewer the plugs, number 5 was covered in the caramel of oil and water, but when cranked, water did not spurt out. It also seems not to have affected the rest of the engine as yet as the rest of the oil looks fine. Would this be a piston ring?

Leaking head gasket is my guess. As for fuel problem again my guess would be the pickup tube has dropped off from rust.

Thinking of switching to Holden power - gasp.
If you do decide to join the screamin' GM club make sure the motor can tolerate abuse of revs ie, 173, 176, 186 rather than 161 or 202.

I agree with jay, there is a couple of holdens to stay away from, 202 is definitely one of those i've heard. If you want more reading material on the conversion there is a good website for it out there, but honestly, i'd have killed to have had the original engine sometimes, especially for originalities sake.

Otherwise, how is it going :?:

The long weekend beckons with the Landy under control.

Investigation of the carby indicated too much oil in the drip on the carby, meaning that the fuel was effectively blocked. Martin at Eastern Suburbs Auto ran a kit through it and now is firing well.

I imagine that this could have been when I took out the radiator. I pulled out the air filter and oil trap without removing the hose, meaning that oil from the trap could have flowed back down the hose and into the carby.

No sign of head gasket issues either as far as I can tell - potentially a loose fitting plug let water into the piston.

I remain to see just how well it runs, and will be putting a new 78 degree thermostat in for the summer. If you see me stuck somewhere between Sydney and Hawksnest, do stop for a chat.

Thanks for all the helps - I find the diagnostic support of others on this forum one of the key benefits - it is also a terrific education that you are not going to find from the workshop manual.

And I bet you'd be swearing you should've kept the Holden if you did.

Probably, but I meant more starting with the original rather than the holden, then I wouldn't know better, I would have a more original vehicle to restore and I wouldn't have so much dodgy wiring

Despite the issues I have had with my original Leyland, it is still strong, starts first time and pulls Jap cars out of the bog.

It is also simple enough for an idiot like me to hit with a hammer.

8O no wonder you have problems if you treat it like that !

I know Phoenix.. only teasing. With Hellspawn it never crossed my mind about originality, having pottered along in a series 2 2.25 for many camping trips. Rather have power than originality any time when doing distance.
