I'm sure mine is 2004 td5 disco with dual headlights. Traction control and cdl. Does that sound like series 2?

I think the D2 has axle and drive flange as one piece, if so that won't be the problem, but the axles, CV (front) and diffs can all break.
That'd make a racket if axles or diffs were broken though wouldn't it Mark?
I just had a peep at a video on replacing bearing on one of these:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wehm59t0DuA
and it has separate flanges and axles so that'd be my first port of call - check the flanges aren't flogged out cos they're a total showstopper, although it's unlikely all 4 would go at once and it'd be signalled by some severe backlash upon dropping the clutch.

Also, your car is likely to be a TD5 or petrol, definitely not a 200 or 300Tdi. I think they stopped in like 97 or 98 and then Td5's came in. As for gearbox, R380 sounds about right it'd be R380 or later, not LT77. The Disco 2 with the headlights like the latest discos is a TD5 or I think 3.9L petrol. I stand to be corrected there.

Or more likely you have slotted the transfer case into neutral , easy enough to do when you push the leaver into lock!

Hi Schuy1, he said both shafts are spinning (I'm assuming that's both prop shafts) so that'd mean he'd engaged some sort of gear, wouldn't it?
didge36, did you have this up on axle stands to check all this or have a look under the car when it wasn't moving?

Ahh, so he did, well if that is the case he has a most serious problem and expensive too! If the CDL is engaged the car will still drive regardless if 1 of the diffs has failed. This is procedure if you have to remove a tailshaft due to uni fail and ned to get home. There will be noise if its a diff failure and given the axle nut to drive flange is torqued at 400+NMs it is unlikely to flog out

If it's 2004 then you have an update Discovery Series Two, often referred to as a D2a.
If it's a manual it's an R380. Forget the rest of the crap, and there are several posts about what oil to use in them.
Have you had it moving at all? Been off-road?
If both front and rear tailshafts are moving, as has been said you've got a busted axle/diff or CV joint at the front on both ends.

I'm suggesting the OP figures out why it's not going anywhere with the centre diff locked before he worries about what gearbox he has and what oil to use one thing at a time and all that.

    What is the diffrence

    Hi Didge,

Whats the back story to this problem .....were you out having some 4WD Fun .......unusual to have a major failure out of the blue as Discos are a robust vehicle.

This could help pinpoint the problem ......
