The CDL only locks drive from the transfer case to both front and rear driveshafts, lockers generally refers to diff lockers which locks the drive from the diff center to both axles.

This is how I understand it
Full time 4wd requires a center diff in the T/case to prevent windup and things going bang...different wheels turn different speeds and the centre diff sorts out the differences. Fitted standard to Defenders, D1 and some D2
In both cases, CDL and diff lock, trouble is, if you have 1 wheel off the ground, all the drive will go through to the path of least resistance and you are possibly bogged

Locking the center diff should mean that 1 rear wheel and 1 front wheel spinning with no traction will cause loss of forward momentum(bogged!)

A diff lock in either the front or rear will mean both wheels on the offending axle will turn at the same speed, removing you from the bogged situation, and your wife forgiving you for spending so much on diff locks

    Clear as mud?

A CDL, or centre diff lock, is in the transfer case, what is usually referred to as a locker is the same device but mounted in the axle diff. The CDL locks front and rear drive shafts together. A 'locker', or cross axle diff lock, locks the left and right wheel of one end together.

The models of front and rear different lock are ARB air lockers, or ashcroft, electric like some factory lockers and Eaton, then there are the auto lockers like Detroit.
With air and electric lockers you switch them off on road, a Detroit works as needed so is a set and forget.
LR took away the centre different lock on the D2 for certain years as they thought the traction control was going to be better. They put it back in the last 2? year's of D2 production.
The reason your centre is not locked all the time as somebody else has already stated is to stop wind up and eventually breakage in either the diffs or gearbox, the same goes for air/electric. As when you go around.a corner the wheels go different speeds, if they are.locked they will try and turn at.the same speed and one of. your tyres(one with least resistance) will skip, or something in your different will snap.
In a defender you can engage low range without locking the centre different, this is handy for towing heavy items on road when parking in odd angles. Other makes cannot do this.

Both diffs, or a combination of an axle, drive flange, CV or diff, one at each end, would prevent you moving.
I think the D2 has axle and drive flange as one piece, if so that won't be the problem, but the axles, CV (front) and diffs can all break.
