The Conran design is so ugly that it is one reason I'd never buy an early Disco. It was ugly when it was introduced and hasn't improved with age.

I'm surprised LR ever accepted it.

I went from Sydney to Hawkes nest, a full day of messing around in sand on the beach trying to find good surf, filled up in sydney, 400km later the low fuel light had yet to be seen ( probably was'nt working... ), not bad for the V8, around town is a shocker though.....

OK , just went to Sunshine coast and back to Sydney in my 92 Range Rover V8 with Thor manifold, modded heads and unichip and long range tank.

Speed was at posted limit using cruise control with speedo corrected to GPS so about 117 on speedo and 106. About 30?% at 117. And LOTS of bloody long roadworks as well as 1HOUR!!!! from Woolgoolga to banana shop south of Coffs. And sat on 125 indicated up Moonie Moonie hill and Hawkesbury Hill south.

First tank 13.7 Litres per 100KM straight highway. refilled at 114.9cpl at Tugun.
Second tank 16.5 litres per 100Km mixture about 60 % highway and in Brissy suburban. refill at 113.9 at Tugun
Third tank 14.9 Litres per 100Km straight highway plus a little Sydney suburbs.
    refill at 125.9 Narrabeen.
I reckon not too bad and not sooo far behind an AUTO Disco TD5 especially considering fuel price diffference(10 c per litre min even in Qld).

    Dubious claims about fuel consumption

I have learnt to view some people's claims about fuel consumption with a great deal of suspicion.
The worst ones are those who say such things as ," I filled my tank last week with Brand X and got an extra 50k before the warning light came on."
Next on the list are those who say, "I filled up after the trip and it took X number of litres for the 750km".
My reasons for taking little notice of those claims is that I have noticed just how much impact some things have on the apparent fuel consumtion for one or two tankfulls.
Quite apart from the impact of driving 2 or 3 kph faster or slower and the effect of a slight headwind or tailwind I have noticed that filling some fuel tanks is not consistent enough to accurately calculate fuel consumption.
I have seen a Defender traytop tank apparently full, with froth dribbling out on the ground take another 5 or 6 litres with enough patience. It can take as long to add the last 5 litres as the first 50.
So a 75 litre tank that appears full might have only 70 litres; enough to make an apparent difference of 1 litre/100k on a 500k trip.
The variables and inaccuracies tend to even out over time, so the figures I find most convincing are from the people who say, I carefully recorded all the fuel I bought for the last 6 months and it worked out at X litres/100k.

Absolutely right!!! .....best to take it over as many tankfulls as is practical.....If you are in a hurry to do some figures, try to fill at same garage and pump at same time of day with same initial level [before filling up] of fuel and just stop at 1st click-off and allow flow rate [how hard you press on pump handle] to be same

With the Thor engine I'm NOT surprised - but WHAT size? ......I know I get much better fuel use from my RR 4.6 HSE than my Disco 1 3.9 and a friend with RR 4.6 HSE Thor gets better than me.....was it much trouble putting in the Thor gubbins ?....what ignition [with or w/out a distributor, 1 coil or coil pack?

The engine is a 3.9 running 14CUX but with new style Bosch 4 hole injectors.
Vacuum advance is controlled by the unichip to give a rudimentary electroic control..
    Cam is standard 3.9.

I feel a lot of the gain is from
1 throttle openings less due to Thor long runners giving better charge at lower revs so that the injection is at a leaner position on the curve.
2 less changing down by auto on long hills.
3 Unichip providing much more advance at small throttle openings.

I still think I can get a lot more from the engine so next step is to map the
mixtures with a wide band O2 sensor.
4.6 using gems or motronic constantly try for 14.9 stoicometric fuel air ratio at cruise and advance to knock then back off, so they are very difficult to improve.
    Regards Philip A
