Loss of acceleration in Discovery TD5

Hi, I'm back again with another on-going problem (is this car a lemon or what??!!) - every now and then I lose all acceleration when driving, although when I pull over, the car idles beautifully. Turning the engine off, waiting 10 seconds, and restarting, fixes the problem.

When it doesn't completely lose acceleration, it just has small bursts of power loss as I'm driving, rather like a faulty cylinder or something (which it isn't).

Does anyone have any similar experience or knowledge of what on earth this could be? It is not the EGR valve malfunctioning, the computer doesn't log anything of interest.

There was another post in this forum along similar lines.

It turned out to be the turbo boost being too high and the ECU dropping into "limp home" mode. Stopping the engine and restarting seemed to fix it. The symptom was most noticeable onthe hills.

Have a browse through the most recent few pages of this forum and you might find the answer you are looking for.

Here you go. I found the other link. Does this sound similar to your symptoms?

Thanks so much for your replies - it did sound somewhat familiar, except mine does it even on the flat doing 40k sometimes. However, I have a list of things I can cart off to the mechanic now - thanks again. I'll let you know what happens.

Hi Vinay -- as Moses has pointed out, I had a similar problem with my turbo overboosting and causing the ECU to go into a partial limp mode. When it was happening it would feel like a blocked air or fuel filter and fuel consumption would head north.

Turning the engine off, would reset the ECU and everything would be OK, until it overboosted again, usually when the engine was under load (going up hills on a freeway). My ECU has been remapped and it was simply a case of retuning the boost to overcome the problem. I have not had the problem reoccur.

When I was discussing the problem there were a range of things thrown up that could have been the given similar symptoms. Dicky air flow meter, missing fuel maps in the ECU, connections to the turbo. There was also another possibility relating to a breather valve in the air box (upsetting the air flow meter), apparently these are only on the post 2002 TD5s.

I would be interested to know how you go. The mysteries of the TD5 ECU seem run very deep and the more knowledge we can capture the better it is for everyone.

    All the best
