4BD1T says no - troubles starting

Ok guys. It's cold. It's wet. It's dark.
I've never had trouble starting the Perentie before. Oh, it's usually been a bit warmer.
This is my first foray into the dark world of diesel so a lot of things are new to me. Why am I unable to start the Perentie? It just turns over.

Check the edic motor /fuel shut off is working Mick. That's the most likely cause of no start.

I assume you know about the glow. The little light on the dash, usually looks a random spring. That is glow start. Turn the key on , wait till the light turns off and then start

Ah! In the Perentie I thought it was the choke symbol. I also thought it was wait until it turns on.
    Off for another go.

The 4BD1 series does not need glow plugs outside Antarctica. A diesel engine should start on the first firing stroke after injection commences. You need these things, fuel to the injection pump, compression, and injection at the correct time..

On the top of the injection pump there are 2 levers with cables attached. One closest to the block is the throttle, and the one outboard is the shutoff lever.
From memory, the run position for the shutoff lever is roughly parallel with the block (possibly closer to the block than parallel).
When in the run position you should be able to move it away from the block against spring pressure to the shutoff position. The EDIC would normally pull it to shutoff.

Found a piccy. Shutoff is in the run position here (and the lever with the 2 return springs is throttle).

Look immediately under the air intake elbow on the drivers side. You should see a cable attached to the rear end of the fuel pump. Get someone to look when you switch the ignition on/off and see if it is moving. It may not be working and stuck in the off position,

    Thankyou. Very nice offer.
I was going to take you up on it but I'm having a little difficulty pushing it there. Queensland is up hill all the way from Victoria.
