Relocation of ECUs....again
OK -- I know this one has been touched on before (to limited response), but given some recent experiences I thought I would throw it up again.
The possible relocation of ECU (Engine Control Units) for EFI Rangies/Discos and TD5s. From the factory they are located under the drivers seat -- not the best spot, nor the highest spot in the vehicle when confronting H2O. In a way it sort of defeats the purpose of a snorkel when water at door level threatens the ECU and vehicle life!
There have been some talks of attempts to waterproof the boxes under the seats in Defenders, air-tight tupperware containers and the total relocation of ECUs to higher ground within the cabin.
Given the number of vehicles affected and the potential expense of having to replace an ECU (let alone the inconvienence of being stranded), I am interested to know of what people know about work arounds to the problem. Have people seen or know of relocations? How effective are waterproofing attempts?
I really think it is worth bowling this one up again. I will also be speaking with some Landy specialists to see whether there are any kits available to solve this problem. My thinking is relocating the ECU to either in the roof lining or on a shelf above the drivers head. I expect it will be costly, but so are ECUs to replace and the inherent shyness of water this problem creates.
Thanks again
