Relocation of ECUs....again

OK -- I know this one has been touched on before (to limited response), but given some recent experiences I thought I would throw it up again.

The possible relocation of ECU (Engine Control Units) for EFI Rangies/Discos and TD5s. From the factory they are located under the drivers seat -- not the best spot, nor the highest spot in the vehicle when confronting H2O. In a way it sort of defeats the purpose of a snorkel when water at door level threatens the ECU and vehicle life!

There have been some talks of attempts to waterproof the boxes under the seats in Defenders, air-tight tupperware containers and the total relocation of ECUs to higher ground within the cabin.

Given the number of vehicles affected and the potential expense of having to replace an ECU (let alone the inconvienence of being stranded), I am interested to know of what people know about work arounds to the problem. Have people seen or know of relocations? How effective are waterproofing attempts?

I really think it is worth bowling this one up again. I will also be speaking with some Landy specialists to see whether there are any kits available to solve this problem. My thinking is relocating the ECU to either in the roof lining or on a shelf above the drivers head. I expect it will be costly, but so are ECUs to replace and the inherent shyness of water this problem creates.

Thanks again

Great thread Noddy 8O

After my experience with the dreaded H2O and a floor mounted E.C.U.
I now feel at least confident in answering this question.

I have paid the ferryman(pardon the pun) and Lithgow Ford.

I can see only one true location that can avoid this occuring ever again, and that is on the "****'n bench in my garage". there ond only there will it be safe from the terrorist H2O and the guys at Lithgow Ford

The Rangie is now to be refered to as HMAS 'LIL PIG.

seriously though ace and I discussed the option of mounting it in a roof console or perhaps in the rear also roof mounted. Has anyone done this before if so what cost's are involved?

Aquarangie relocated his to near his stearing column - right hand airvent area.

His vehicle was of a similar vintage as Jasons - ie Lucas Hotwire injection, which is easier then the Lucas Flapper type as the ECU is smaller in the Hotwire type.

While building my D100 the Hotwire ECU will be mounted up near the dash - prob behind a 2002+ radio console.

Just a few thoughts.

I was playing around behind my dash this evening and I am not too sure how weather proof it is. The reason being that the air vents extend along behind the 2002 dash. It is certainly better than on the floor and it is not too often that you drive along in the rain with your vents open. I actually noticed it this afternoon when trying to dodge hail stones 8O

Does anyone know whether the additional cabling and hence voltage loss impact on the ECU?

Its got to be better than under the seat / seat box location.

As mine came from a late Classic RR - ECU was under the driver seat and the wiring loom goes through the firewall, I would not need to extend my cables.

Just mount it as high as you can.

also the TD5 Defender ECU is under the seat box?

Then would it be possible just to relocate and not extend the cables to near the dash / firewall? Maybe try tracing your wiring loom back from the ECU.

Just a thought.

Yeah -- the ECU is in the box and the cabling runs out of the front of the box and along the transmission tunnel up under the dash.

They ain't small suckers either. I was just thinking on the under side of the steering column, but I think the ECU would be too bulky.

Hey Jason,

So what the damage from the Stealer and the NRMA set you back?

Anything other than the Coil need replacing / not working?

I had a mate who's car went totally under in seawater - got stuck when recovering his boat, next day we got the old Series out and dragged it back home.

It was running after a short time, only issue was everytime he switched something on it just blew fuses - but long enough to drive it to the auctions on Monday morning after drying out in the sun the rest of the weekend. naaa Dai****su Feroza.

It was trying to recover a 20 odd foot boat (over 2 tonnes) in soft sand - but it normally made it.

He as his brother got a tractor after that
