    Wheels - what fits what??

I'm looking for second-hand wheels to take tubless tyres for my 98 Defender wagon.
Is there a listing/table somewhere that gives the specifications (including stud spacings, offsets) of wheels from different Landy models? It would make searching easier to know what fits and what doesn't.
For instance, do any of the old Rangie wheels fit?

All Land Rovers, excluding the 101 with 6 stud wheels, up until the P38A, Disco II, and Freelander use the same PCD with 5 studs.

Stud sizes changed but, excepting the above, generally anything from Series II onward will fit anything else.

Offsets are generally 33mm except for the 130. Not sure about forward control vehicles, they may be less, e.g. 27mm.

P38A and Series II Discos have a smaller PCD and an offset of 57mm.

In all cases, the offset should be marked on the wheel, e.g., 7J x 16 x 33mm.

The only problems of which I'm aware with fitting older Rangie steel wheels is that the end of the axle may not fit through the centre of the rim. I've seen Series vehicles with the centres opened up to clear.

Alloy rims can only be used on hubs with the right studs. The studs have a mark like a dash (or a triangle) stamped into the end. I don't know what the issue is and why this is so.

Early RR wheels are not safety rims and are not designed for tubeless tyres. Some are welded, some are rivetted.

As I understand it, apart from offset, wheels were either 125mm or 165mm P.C.D.

Yours would be 165mm so I reckon any old LR wheels would do the job.
I had an '86 County which came without safety rims. Whilst running tubes I was forever getting flats due to the tubes running too hot.

Started running tubeless on the original rims and never had a prob. May not have been exactly cosher but it worked for me.

?? Tubless tyres on Non-safety rims??

Thank you both for that info.

Rosco, you mentioned running tubless tyres on standard, non-safety rims, without any trouble. Questions:-

    1. What was the brand and specification of the tyres that you had fitted?

    2. What sort of 4wdriving did you use them for?

    3. What tyre pressures did you use for sand or other difficult conditions?

    4. How often did you need to re-pressurise the tyres?

Has any one else had experience running tubless tyres on standard rims?

When you think about it, the safety rim is only to stop the bead of the tyre coming off the rim in the event of a flat, so in that instance I don't see what difference it would make, tubless or tubed.

From memory I tried a few different brands over the 7 odd years, usually 750R16 or 235.85 R16.

Dropped pressure down to 18-20 for sand work without any probs.

Oops .. missed a couple of points.

Didn't need to check pressure more often than usual.
Mostly sand work in those days with limited bush work.

    Cheers

I ran tubeless tyres on my old rims... but with tubes in 'em.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
