Disco remote entry

Hi guys,
Can anyone help. I have constant problems with the remote entry to my 96 Discovery. Key works fine, new batteries in remotes. Works sometimes and not others now has stopped working altogether.
Has anyone had a similar problem. Thanks ET.

Hi,
97 Disco here, my remote works ok, but dismal range. About 2-3 metres thats all. New battery didn't help.
Maybe your problem starts out similar to mine, interested to know the result.

it will probably need to be re programmed to the car.

a procedure kept secret by the dealerships which should take about 5-10 mins.

see if you can get a copy of the procedure from them.

it appears these play up a fair bit. ive seen it happen before.

if you read the handbook it tells you how to disarm it manually for when the buttons dont work.

Disconnect the battery for a while. I did it overnight. So the car loses it memory. Remember to have your Radio code as you will nned to enter he security of the radio as this will be also lostThen had to re program the key in.
Stand at the front of the car and press the button 3 times in a row, then it will re program

Okay this will be a tangent but think it will be helpful.

My t.v. remote use to do weird things, press volume up and it would change channels and would need to be aimed at the t.v. from 2ft away for it to work. Thought it was batteries in the 'mote beginning to fail. Installed fresh ones and made no difference.

Asked a t.v. guy about it and he told me most remotes have a printed circuit board inside and the rubber buttons act like contacts on the circuit board. What happens is they gradually get clogged with stuff off your hands so the contact isn't as good. Which is why it stops working properly.

So what you do is pull it all apart and clean the circuit board and the rubber buttons with metho and a tooth brush, dry it with a hairdryer or sit in the sun...which ever... then reassemble. Should work like a new one.

I read in an article in LROI, that overhead powerlines and other metal structures have been reported to interfere with them. I used to park my commodore next to the gas tank in the car park at work, the remote button worked sometimes, but not others, when i started parking at the other end, say 50m away it worked fine. Not sure what caused it, this was with new batteries aswell. Matt

Remote problem

My remote plays up on occasions , wont lock/unlock doors , but strangest of all on a trip from Birdsville to Cameron Corner the security system would partly arm it`s self as in the hazard lights would start flashing every time I hit a pot hole or bad corrugations.

At firstI thought it was the hazard warning switch but after a lot of mucking around found I could only turn them off by turning the ignition off then on and re setting the alarm with the remote, until the next pot hole , it works fine on relative smooth road.

Thought for a while it may have been the bonnet switch activating with bonnet movement, all other switches are ok ......... will put in the rainy day project basket.

Hasn't got a ..... just got a mental blank of the name of the thing..... those anti movement devices in the alarm has it ?

Might be that causing the symptoms.

Why when the alarm is disarmed I have no idea but it's just a usual left field thought.

The name came to me.... shock sensor.

Try taking the battery out of the key fob & hold one of the buttons down for min 10 seconds. Apparently this resets the fob. Reinstall battery, walk near the car (anything from 2cm off the drivers side window to several metres in mine) and press unlock 3 times to synchronise the fob.

I'll have to try cleaning the circuit board as stated and see if this improves matters.

I have heard of some "shock sensors" disabling the vehicle after a big bump. Something to do with safety in an accident - cuts fuel etc. The only way to reset is to stop and restart.

Cheers

Cam
