Many people call a standard steel rule, a straight edge. They are not laterally stiff enough to be a straight edge and any lateral flex or a slight tilt will introduce errors.
However if the machinist is doing this kind of work all of the time, he should have a proper straight edge.
Like Rick said in an earlier post, well seasoned cast iron is fairly stable, on the other hand fabricated steel is not. If the block has distorted, I would expect the mains would need to be line-bored as well as surfacing the deck. Also check that the bores are within spec for circularity, etc.
Good luck.

:D Sorry Serg, really shouldn't kick a man when he is down... but it was worth the chuckle (for me) :D
Hey nothing wrong with the good old Buick fireball mate. Light, good torque, easy to work on and won't self destruct on oil....
But how good would a new alloy chev 6.3 or what ever they are be...looks like we can legally fit them here now also.
Sounds like a load of BS too me,if the block was rebuilt it should have had the deck squared to the crank tunnel, not just skimmed which sounds like what happened, blocks don't just ''drop'' in the middle or go out of shape for no reason,it should have been machined true before re-assembly. Pat
How big, physically, is the 4HK1-TCN?
I assume a bloody huge lump of an engine to get to 5.2L?
Why am I asking? It's the only engine available in our NPS 4x4 range over here.
Alternatively, how good is the 3L 4JJ1?
the 4H's aren't too big block-wise. But the rearward facing starter is a show-stopper for most installations.
4JJ1's seem alright, but haven't reached competitive power/torque levels. Used in the current Isuzu utes, the Holden version of the same utes have completely different engines.
Like Bush65 said, why haven't they made a 3.3 litre half duramax?
If it fits in a defender, surely it could be made to fit in a p38;)
