Deep grumbling sound under load

    Hi Guys,

Looking for suggestions. My D2 is giving a deep rumbling sort of grumble sound . Seems to be coming from the left front area (but sitting in the drivers seat most things sound left front - so I could be wrong. - Hearing isn't my greatest attribute ops: )

Only seems to be there when the drive train is under acceleration load. Take off hard it's there - tow a heavy trailer - it's there. take of really gently can't hear it and when just cruising maintaining speed or braking it is not audible either! The sound is almost like BIG marbles rolling around! - kind of hard to describe :?

I have checked all Suspesion all seems tight - no sus bushes etc that I can find. Diff has plenty of nice clean fresh oil. Only thing I have found so far is the rubber boot on the slide joint at the front of the front drive shaft is sad - tried pumping more grease there and the uni - didn't seem to make a difference. I will change it properly on the week end. I checked brakes and wheel bearings they seem fine too.

Car is V8 D2 has just over 90,000k on the clock.
I am reasonably capable with a spanner - but certainly no Landy expert... yet.

So before I go and spend money getting the experts to look for me...

    Any suggestions of likely culprits????

    Cheers.

    I hope not... 8O

Any suggestion on the best way to test the CV??

The noise does not seem to relate to cornering - but now that you mention it it - the sound is not unlike a shot CV we had in a front wheel drive years ago..

You could try removing the front tailshaft, locking the centre diff and driving it to see if its gone,if so the problem is probably in the front axle.
    CV joint sounds quite possible.

    8) drain the cv thingo box [can't think of what land rover callit right now] and see what comes out, theres a drain plug at the bottom of the swivel housing [thats it!] if you get big bits with part nos. i'd say its sick,
your's is probably grease filled, but the diff oil has a tendancy to migrate there [it seems to not be a problem]
if you have been near water the wheel bearings are a definate possibility

Terrific Idea... but the nice people at Landrover giving me no locking centre diff (Disco 2 :x ) makes that too hard to test at this point - I might end up trying to lock it manually from under the car...

I just tried some circle work in an open car park... slowly at first in each direction on full lock...... then harder until I was doing 25km/h on full lock 8O 8O no odd noises at all in either direction

From my limited knowledge that makes me reasonably sure the Diffs and CV's are cool...

But,.. the bloody grumble noise is still there if I boot it in a straight line - or tow something heavy :x

How strong are these transfer cases?.... my next guess is to try draining the oil from the transfer case and see if that looks good. (Diff oil is clean as if it came from the bottle.)

Harry my "cv thingo box " is different too.... BMW seems changed lots of stuff under these Discos.. so I have a CV on the half shaft - need to dismantle the boot and the CV to take a close look from what I see in the manual.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?... or could anyone at least confirm my suspisions that no noise on full lock circles tends to confirm CV's are ok??? :?

    Thanks

if youre doing circle work and not getting a clacketty sound its good news for the cv joints. but i think they are cheaper than a transfer case.

the word you guys are looking for, for the thingy, i think is swivel hubs.

its probably a wheel bearing or maybe an output shaft or layshaft in the gearbox. hard to find on the net without hearing exactly how it sounds and when.

but the cv's sound ok from where im sitting

The rumble probably sounds like a laden coal train passing.....

I'm inlcined to think it'd be a worn or loose diff pinion bearing and probably the back one if there's been heavyish towing involved as they tend to take the strain more than the front. Even for such a 'new' vehicle wouldn't surprise me.

The again.... you sure the tyres aren't rubbing on the guards when you're doing these activities?

It's unlikely to be the transfer box. LT230s are quite strong, about the only thing in a Landrover drivetrain that is!

Have you checked the engine mountings? If it's making a noise under load it might be because the torque reaction is flexing the engine mounts (if they're loose or worn), so that the exhaust or something similar is touching the chassis.

Good thought I'll take a close look tonight....

HellSpawn - You are absolutely right with the description..<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>The rumble probably sounds like a laden coal train passing.....
That is Exactly what it sounds like!...

Hope you're not right with the diagnosis though
