    Fuel additives for 300TDi

    Hi,

New owner of '95 Disco TDi (see introductions) and when buying a drip tray from Super Cheap (only two small drips seemingly from auto) I noted a number of products designed for adding to my fuel.

Do these actually clean injectors etc and keep my engine shiny and new for another 225000 kms or are they a waste of money?

Who uses them (please provide product name) and what benifits do they gain if any?

    Thanks Sean

    Hi Sean
If you buy your diesel mainly in country towns(with slow fuel turn over) or store diesel in a tank one of the addatives which stop diesel "bugs" (a type of fungi) would be worth while.
There is a product fron "Cost Effective Maintence" which is used in the diesel fuel and a seperate product for oil flushing. These are very good in dirty diesels.Have a look in the "Reviews" section and also a search of the forum for Update on CEM Oilflush.
If you are getting really good power/economy,no black clouds following you and your engine runs smoothly most addatives would be a waste of money.Despite the best maintence carried out on any diesel, the fact remains the diesel sold in australia is of poor quality, and is only just starting to improve with the introduction of low sulphur diesel.
Others who have used the CEM products in their Disco's should be able to give an update on how they are going with it.
We use the CEM in our Trytoo,I ran out of the fuel treatment 6 or 8 weeks ago,it definately runs better with it than without.

I've used Wynns (Diesel) Fuel Injector Cleaner a couple of times on my Tdi. Whilst my engine didn't suffer from any obvious problems prior to using it, it definitely improved after the treatment. The engine runs and idles smoother, and responsiveness improved too (within the limits of a Tdi  ) .

As LandyAndy suggested, the CEM products - 'Clean Power" fuel additive and FOC "Flushing Oil Concentrate" seem to get very good results.

I use both in my V8 Range Rover with good results.

You can order online at www.costeffective.com.au

This stuff is so highly concentrated, it is good value - a little goes a long way.

    Cheers

We use a additive called "Fuel Set". We get it in comercial drums of 20Ltrs, which is alot, when considering that it's mixed at 1ml per 4Ltrs, it can be used in all fuels. We notice the biggest differences in diesel engines, old cruzers get an adverage of 80-90km extra out of a tank, the 3.9 Isuzu LR get an adverage of 60-70 Km extra, TD5's adverage around the 50-60 km extra mark. Modern fuel injected petrol's vary considerably, with Suzuki jiminy's gettin 40-50 extra, kia reo 30-40km.
I can't recall all the car's that we've trialed it on but I know that every car it was added to showed significant improvement in starting(especially in cold weather), ideling power, fuel consumption.
Don't know where to buy it as I havn't exactly been looking for it in the stores.

    Cheers Larns

Oh and it's great for two strokes!!! ie. the mower/boat

I use the CEM in the Xtreme. Seemed to make things a little smoother and gave better economy.

Like Larns, I also use 'Fuel Set'. A mate of mine uses it on his farm machinery.

Noticeable improvement in fuel economy on the TD5 and also blows less smoke.

Would recommend the product. I think they are based in WA?

Here is the link to the company that makes 'Fuel Set'. I get mine from my mate, but I think you can buy it direct from Liquid Engineering in WA.

    Fuel additives

Thanks for the advice. I would like to keep the 300Tdi running well. It looks like a fuel additive is the way to go. I will look into the various products mentioned.

PS: Is a puff of smoke at start up normal?

    Thanks

    Sean
