Could do with some more details? Was it the defender?, was it under heavy load when it happened etc.

Have you tried using low range on the transfer case to see if anything happens? Also is there any noise when you try to move the car in gear... Pretty much more info please.

Had that happen to my ZG 351 Fairlane.
    Busted the gearbox

Did you have a look to see if it had junped out of high range ?

My Disco does that if not locked in properly.

Try locking the CDL. My Disco did that and it was a CV joint. If you have drive with the CDL locked that's what it probably is.

Have you had someone look underneath while you try and drive? (NOT PUTTING THEMSELVES IN THE WAY OF ANY WHEELS)
    Is either prop shaft rotating?

The only thing I can think of is that your central diff was locked somehow without the indicator being lit and (assuming you turned a corner to get into your driveway) it blew the central diff... It's the only thing that could have any sort of load.

Were you turning a corner when it happened? Does it sound like any gears are turning in the gearbox or transfer case when you let out the clutch with the engine idling?
