    Yep like i said rip off the pto cover lever out the alloy bearing housing and you will find your coulprit id say like the pic utemad posted a striped output shaft i have a LT77 here with the same drama and you will need to get another box and if its a tdi 200 with a LT77 id say this is what your prob will be as the early LT77 in the fender is the same as the one in the rangies tho the V8 has a different length input shaft and im not sure if this can be swaped from either box someone on here should have a beta idea on which box to use

    I really really hope it aint the output shaft....on a disability pension money is real tight and wouldnt allow for a R380 at the moment

    Actually, while the back cover is off, it might be worth seeing which side of the shaft the problem is... i.e. Is the problem in the gearbox or Xfer/diff?

    1 - In neutral, can you turn the shaft into the gearbox?
    2 - In 4th, can you still turn it? (if you can, it's the gearbox that's buggered)
    3 - Try the other gears... That will tell you if the problem is in the gearbox somewhere.

    If it's any help, these are similar symptoms to what I had when I sheared the output shaft of the gearbox. (It sheared just behind the seal, on the inside of the box)

    If it is & you've got access to a press, rebuilding a R380 isn't too difficult... IIRC - RAVE has the overhaul manual.

    Id doubt it would have an r380 in it as the avitar looks like an early defender

    Kev is it a tdi 200 with a LT77 is reverse up and foward next to first ????

    Ive never heard the output shaft go BANG its more of a sickening crunching grinding noise.....

    not to say it couldnt be that....

    I sure hope your right Dave....

    It was really weird it was driving fine i drove Phillip Island and back on Saturday 200klm on Sunday drove to Eildon and back another 200klm plus a bit of running around today....Just pulled in the driveway put it in 1st let my foot off the clutch and bang!!!

    It sounded like it jumped out of high range and the transfer leaver was the 1st thing i reached for...
