    Td5 radiator split

Hi guys just doing some general maintenance on the disco this afternoon and noticed the fan shroud cover had slipped out of the tabs on the bottom of the radiator. I undid the two screws on top of the radiator holding the shroud, relocated the shroud and proceeded to tighten the Philips head screws only to hear a hissing to start on the passengers side. Yep as I guessed it somehow I had split the plastic on the radiator. My three questions here are.
Is this common? (Or am I an unlucky moron)
Can this be repaired or is it replacement only?
If replacement only will non genuine for this part cut the mustard( I have genuine most other parts)
    Any help appreciated!!

    Hello,
As the radiator get older the plastic does get brittle. Looks like you are up for a new one.
I have welded new alloy tanks on each side before took a bit of time though.

The fan shroud screw on the passenger side has pushed through the radiator. You can seal it up. The next thing that will happen is you will accidentally snap off the expansion tank overflow pipe connection on the passenger side of the radiator by the same screw.

Of course speaking from personal experience here.... Fortunately for me I already had a new radiator ready to install when it happened to me. I have not refitted the top fan shroud screws and instead use cable ties to hold in place. Didn't want to punch hole in the new radiator tanks refitting these screws.

Any epoxy into the screw hole and do it up...

Or sikaflex / silicone in first.

Just give it time to cure before pressurising it.

    radiator split

Easy fix for those that haven`t broken into the water passage, when replacing radiator use screws half the length,The shroud isn`t carrying any load to speak of.

So I have attempted to fix it at the end of the day. Did a bit of research on epoxys and bonding agents and conducted a few tests. Sikaflex Tank grey is the best for plastics with the presence of moisture but had to use a sika flex activator to make sure it went off properly. Takes about 5days to completely cure but then unbreakable. Took the disco for a long hard run on the weeknd and no sign of trouble or leaks...... Yet will see how long it lasts but so far so good. All up $26 worth of epoxy better than $380 for a new radiator and all the time to fit it.
