Fed up with smoke maker....i mean 2.6 ltr six

Yup, the dummy is in the dirt :x I've tried all sorts of bloody things to get this f#!*ing six cylinder to stop pumping out smoke, looks like it needs new rings.....dammit. To summarise - The old bugger blows a lot of dirty white smoke after it's been left idling for a while, eventually it fouls the plugs. I thought it may have been running way too rich as well but after much fiddling on the weekend nothings improved. I've replaced the valve stem seals, a surprisingly easy job, but the problem hasn't cleared up. Compression is around 150 on all cylinders (it was rebuilt around 26000kms ago), but just in case it was glazed or gunked up, i filled the cylinders with Kero, no change there either. So i'm left to think that the compression rings are probably still okay but oil control rings are shagged. I reckon i'll wip the head and sump off and pull out the pistons/rods, probably give it a quick hone, tidy up the head+new valve guides. Any suggestions from the guru's among us is much appreciated!

Also, the stem seals cost me an arm and a leg, wheres the best place to get a reasonable price for another set + rings? I've already got a full gasket set so at least thats covered, no stem seals supplied in the kit which is a bit odd.

Anyway, all help/ suggestions/ mods/ tips welcome

Thanks
Bill

G'day OldDog
This vehicle was standing for a while wasn't it :?: If so could be that the oil rings have stuck to the pistons, or if it has been overheated badly the rings have lost their tension Then the wise choice would be to re-ring it and replace the big ends with new shells, I would suggest you contact "British Off Road" in S.E Qld the man to speak to is "Paxton" I will be up there Tomorrow and will ask what spares he has for 2.6 Ltre six, and will post the answer I have some 2.6 parts here mostly 2nd hand Mechanical bits I have saved over the years, If Paxton has got bits I will get some rough prices for you.
Cheers.

I'd be measuring the bores before I got too carried away with just bunging another set of rings in. If the bores are too out of plumb what you effectively have is a cone shape, so if you put new rings in sure they'll bed to a degree but they'll be rushing up and down from tight to loose making them wear faster than tight or loose all the way as they would in a true cylinder. That's because the rings are not just wearing against the bore but against the piston lands as well so double the wear equals half the life in theory.

So if it's okay in the measuring then make the decision but making a mindset of 'I'll just bung another set of rings in' I think is setting yourself up for in months to come of problems.

if its blowing out white smoke chances are its water.

oil in cylinders blows out blue smoke

and running rich blows out black smoke.

is it auto or manual?

true...but if its blowing white smoke what could it be?

what makes a petrol engine blow white smoke?
water=white unless it coolant in it it will then look green smoke
auto trans fluid=white smoke
brake fluid=white smoke if it has a faulty brake booster it can suck in brake fluid.

engine oil = blue smoke
too much fuel = black smoke

diesel = white smoke

Vaccy boosters to my knowledge came out on the SIII for the brakes along with the change to dual system from single system master cyl. So, someone will tell us if I'm wrong but would be unlikely to be brake fluid on a series 2a with no vaccy booster unless it's been mod'd.

Evenin All, Actually the old dogs a series 3 so has the dual circuit brakes/booster setup, i've checked it before and the vac lines clear. I reckon it's definitely oil smoke as it's not the pure white colour of brake oil, it's a dirty colour, blue i spose. Definetly oil though as the last time i ran it it stank up the sheets hanging on the line ops: like burnt oil. Damn the "Domestic Authority" was surly after that

Jay- damn right - I've got a set of micrometers so i'll check the bores for taper and ovality before honing, wouldn't want to be though as the motor was rebuilt about 26k ago.
I reckon Rockets hit the nail on the head with oil control rings that have lost tension, this motor was gunked up and constantly overheating when i first got it, at some stage it's been boiled i'd say. One way to find out for sure, i'll wip off the head this weekend. I havn't had a look but i should be able to just drop the sump/ undo the con-rod bolts/ remove any lip at the top of the bore and push the piston rod assembly straight up and out?

Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming

I had a talk with Paxton today and he gave me some prices for the engine parts, I have sent you a PM with these.

Cheers
