Cousin John's County Project Part 3 The Body.

Cousin John is transplanting a GMC 6.5l V8 diesel into his 85 County.

I’ve been lending a hand and documenting progress. John is not connected to the Internet yet.

The motor has been bench tested and sounds awesome. It is connected to his old series III 4 speed box and transfer.

The following documents the separation of Body and Chassis. Both require work.

John has a shed with an overhead gantry and two chain pully cranes. Some thought and work has been done to set this up to do the job efficiently and safely:

    The set up:

Both chassis and body will be lifted together. The motor and transmission are out. The firewall will stay with the chassis for some more work.

    The Lift:

The body is attached to the overhead gantry outriggers:

The Chassis with firewall is lowered:

Some more work is done to the firewall and it is now ready to be separated from the chassis.
Again the chassis is lifted this time from the front only and the firewall is attached with straps to the overhead gantry out riggers:

    The chassis is lowered :

and can be rolled out for an Easter of:

    Wire brushing
    Rust protection
    Engine and transmission mount modification
    Painting

John was heard to ask: “I wonder how many people around the world are spending their weekends working on their Land Rovers and having this much fun?”

    Another great start.

My comment is since you've gone that far you might as well go the gal dip after the new mounts are welded in and whatever other fiddling is done. Think it's still 40¢/kg for gal dipping for the chassis which is cheap really and will really stop rust for the future. They don't buckle the frames like they used to with gal'ing so it's pretty safe in that regard.

Then give it a hit of etch prime and paint it whatever colour you like. I think it would give a much better result than painting alone as at least that way the whole chassis is protected rather than the usual rusting from the inside out. Yellow chassis with the red body panels would look the part with blue or red suspension.

Those mags.... old "performance" brand arn't they..... ROH bought performance ? Just curious. 8)

Galvanizing has been discussed and buckling has been the issue. Finding a skilled gal'er is an issue. The need is another.

I will find out about the wheels as John has just ordered the fifth as the spare is currently a Disco Steel with an offset change. Not my taste but not my car.

Where are you ?? In the matrix.... Handy.

    Brissy there's a mob in .... ahh.... mental blank... argh ! :x That's it Eagle Farm !!

There's a mob at Coffs Harbour who aren't bad but not as good as the next mob.

    There's a mob at Tomago !

They are the only ones I know about in this stretch of the coast and would stick with the major centre ones than Coffs... they're still learning. We used to send stuff up there to get gal'ed and someone elses stuff would come back or nothing.

I know someone who could blast that chassis if you need it depending on how far away you were of course. Be in Tamworth next week.

Yeah .. like them about as much as white 8 spokers most run these days. Would love a set of Scorpion Racing 'Mach 5' but don't want much for 'em. 8O

Series III 4 speed and not the County 5 speed.

From all accounts a strong box.

John hopes that the gap in ratios will be covered by the torque delivered by the motor.

    Axles are the real issue.

Hmmm i'm a bit confused, i thought the series 3 box was fairly weak? :? and not suitable for too much more grunt. Maybe theres a chance i can use my 327 after all 8)
Anyway, keep the pics rolling 8)

Maybe the correct word is "stronger".

I think your box will die. The syncros wont last. The series 3 boxes had problems with 2.25 deisels, let alone 6.5 chevs.

Before you go to far, investigate the LT95, pretty much bullet proof.

It would be a shame to do some much work only to be pulling gear boxes.

    Thanks Dave.

John is attached to the Series III box particularly in that it has a PTO for his winch.

I will raise this with him.
