I used to have a Sony 10 CD stacker in my Range Rover which was used on a number of trips. It never once skipped even after spending weeks on corrugations and putting in air time on a couple of occasions.... I can't reccomend it enough.

In my Camel, I now run an 40Gb iPod into a Sony head unit via a Dension iPod cradle. The cradle lets me mount the iPod on the dash, re-charge the iPod and control it via the Sony controls. The sound quality is great but the controls are a bit fiddly until you get used to it.

A little note about MP3 players... Make sure you know how the innerds work! A HDD based unit might not be much use in an off-roader if the HDD is constantly spinning. The bouncing around will damage the HDD which in turn means that the MP3 player will go kaput! Make sure it's either a solid state unit (e.g. Memory stick based) or one that caches large chunks of audio to RAM before playback (such as the iPod).

    My opinion,

    Go with the stacker!

I have an Alpine tape player in the usual spot in my Defender - I still listen to tapes ops: Although it also allows me to plug the kids DVD player, or my Laptop into it which has around 300 songs on it.

Then the in-dash CD Stacker I have mounted in the roof console.

Personally, if you like having 140 songs on one CD, then get a MP3 player. Very handy. As I said before all of my songs are on the Laptop, so I don't need one.

I have never had the stacker skip yet mounted in the roof console. Mind you I do drive very easy too!

At the end of the day, if you want just a CD player, go with the stacker. If you want a MP3 player with the extended songs, then go with that one! A MP3 player will hold as many songs on 1 disc as your stacker will on 6, but you have to get on your computer and so all of the work yourself!

    Cheers
    Chris

I’ve got an Ipod and like just about all things Mac, it’s a pain in the butt.
Unlike camel_landy, I can not get a hard wired set up for my Rangie.

I tried the Ipod on a couple of trips, using it with an Itrip transmitter.

Out west it was great but on a trip from Brisbane the Sydney I had to stop about every hour or so to try and find another frequency because of all the radio stations along the coast and in Sydney I just gave up.

But one thing that Apple does have that works well is a program called Itunes. It’s available for both Icraps and PCs and it makes loading tracks, converting them to MP3s and burning MP3 CDs a snack.

    Cheers.

By the way, I’m thinking of getting an MP3 stacker, anyone got any ideas of the sort of prices their asking for them.

Here's a link to the Dension iPod solution:

    Dension ice>Link Plus

It means that the iPod becomes part of your ICE system by pretending to be a CD changer rather than having to tune in to a FM signal.

Hi again camel_landy and thanks but I have already look into that and some others that are available from the states but both the cost of these kits are about the same cost of an MP3 stacker and the fact that I now distrust anything Icrap, i’ve decided to go with the MP3 stacker.

I put a JVC tape deck and 12 stacker in my Disco cost bugger all a JBs and it has yet to skip in 18 months, works great. The mate Brad put one in his TDI prior to a Kimberly trip and he reckons it was pretty good even on the Gib river rd. If you want a factory stacker to go with you tape deck talk to Murray at Jag and rover spares in Brisbane had some last time I was there.

I have a question that is very related to this one.

The Rangie has a tape head unit with 10 CD stacker control and the stacker in the back. The tape unit doesn;t work but otherwise I like the set up a lot. Anyone in Brisbane here good at fixing tape decks (i have heaps of the buggers) or shouldn't I bother.

Also someone mentioned those VDO Dayton all-in-one units (very nice!) just out of interest what are they worth ??

Oh and one last question - where is the aerial on the late Classic Rangies ? Is it built into one of the screens ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

In the very late vehicles, it's actually in the rear quarter windows. Prior to that, it was mounted in the rear tailgate.
