OK I had the same problem as Camel-Landy, even if the diaphram comes out, there is a good chance that the pin that he was talking about maybe siezed, you need to remove the diaphram, then remove the allen key and spring and make sure the little plunger that goes onto the coned part of the diaphram shaft is free, if not you wont have any power, it made the world of difference to mine, come to think of it, it was actually Camel Landy who showed how to do it. Must admit I was sceptical before hand to the difference it would make, but it transformed it from a high speed pig to a usable vehicle.

Thank you fellas,
its good to see there is global co-operation with these things.
I replaced the angle,'where turbocharger turns to intercooler'connection then had a good look at the bit I took off. There was a 1" hole on the underside. Initially it was up the other way (6 months ago) I turned it over when I had to replace the waterpump leaking gasket. (don't ask)

It had been abraded by the clamp above it , it holds on the CVP line to intake tube.

I couldn't get a replacement from my local L/R dealer, am still waiting for there return phone call. I used a universal 50mm 90deg water hose. Had to cut a bit to make it fit.
Took the car for a drive , gave it a bit of a kick , clouds of under load smoke initially, more power, felt good, new car. Checked the hose it was still on, but didn't trust it. I thought this may be a fluke, then I thought I would give it the ultimate test, aircon on , my street in the rural suburb is flat then at my boundary starts going down hill, farely steep then levels out, I came up the hill with the aircon on and the vehicle kept accelerating up.

In short the gradual power loss I have noticed from time to time . which I thought was the aircon being on, was the hole in the line, getting bigger and bigger, assuming the load is 15psi a pinhole first then the pressure made it bigger and bigger. The engine is not getting full boost or any boost when needed.

My wife took it to work last night in Ballina a few hills and dales on the way. Her comment last night when she got home, it feels like a new car, definately going better. (Speed cameras beware here comes another victim.)
I'll know more when I take if for a drive and give it a good workout.
I'll still check the floaty thing adjacent to the diaphram.

Perhaps for those who are having problems with power loss, a check of the air system to make sure it does not have any holes, or loose connections could be a first point of call. I guess if this happened to me it could happen to someone else.

Thank you all for you help
I'll keep you posted as to my assessment.

Hiya Col...

Yep, that was me that showed you how to strip it down.

If you're able to look down into the pump when you remove the cone, you can test to see if the rod is sticking. If you operate the throttle linkage, it should pop out, just use something line the 5mm allen key to pop it back in. If there's any resistance or it doesn't pop out then it'll need sorting.

Ahhh... Bugger!

If it's the bit of hose I think it is then it's normally under negative pressure. Holes there means that you can be sucking all sorts of cr@p into the turbocharger. The other thing to note... How strong is the replacement elbow that you've put in? Being under negative pressure means that the hose can collapse.

Samco do some decent silicone hoses that are suitable for this.... (Which is what I have fitted to my truck).

Mark ,
To quote from the classic TV show 'Don't panic', its not the hose you thought, its the bottom one, perhaps my description was a bit disjointed( as usual) its the positive pressure one, the lower outlet from the turbo, goes to angled connector then onto long shrouded pipe, to the base of intercooler. The top of the intercooler then goes into the intake manifold.
The replacement I used is about 3 times thicker than the original.

I like the alternate way of checking the pin for the rod, I couldn't find a schematic for the injector pump. But what exactly does the pin do, I take it from the 'score' mark on the shaft it locks it into position.

This is all I could find in the way of diagrams....

There was a better one but the site is down now.

The rod doesn't "lock" into position but you will find a slight groove there now due to usage.

you are a hive of information, I expect with a garage full of L/R's you know more than the common man.

I understand now how that cone etc works, with the help of that schematic.
Last night took a drive into town and gave the beast a bit of a workout. It surprised me, accelerated up hills, went well across the flats, accelerated from a standing start, didn't have to wait for a bit break to get through a roundabout while waiting for the motor to windup. Even my son who was wiht me commented that it was moving along better. The only thing it didn't do was crack his neck down hard on the seat like my V8 holden.

After all the cursing and swearing about L/R's being a piece of horse afterburn. I actually like it now.
I think the problems I had been having since we bought the vehicle were all related to that hose, without the benefit of a boost gauge, I am assuming it had a hole in it all along, so the engine was not getting a high enough boost. The hole got bigger and the motor was not getting any at all, and was possibly running similar to a normally aspirated motor( scary if thats what it feels like)

I don't know of that brand of hose, but I'll keep an eye on my relacement and when I find a real L/R spare parts place, I may get the correct hose.

The second week report.
Have driven it a few times now, went up to Tyagarah ( near Byron Bay) on Sunday my my, felt like I had about 2" of pedal left, (certainly different to the previous week when it was flat out staying at the speed limit with the pedal on the floor. I did notice on the highway the absence of what I though was turbo whistle, I have worked out it was turbo whistle alright but blowing straight out the hole in the elbow.
Have given it a kick or too when there have been no obvious signs of bandit activity, it goes like a veritable rocket now. Hard to think soemthing simple was the cause.
I ordered the CEM value pack today, I wonder if using that stuff will make a difference.

Many thanks for your collective valued suggestions.
Now all I have to do is fix the ABS thingy
