200tdi Disco: CEM oil treatment, loss of power, turbo upgrad

Hi - my 93 200tdi Disco (250K k on the clock) had been a bit sluggish and running a bit rough - possibly symptoms of worn injectors (last replaced 100K k ago), but there wasn't really any excess exhaust smoke to suggest this - my mate's 200tdi with 400K k on the clock blows a lot of smoke but runs smoothly and has more power than mine... Anyway, I treated the oil with CEM ('Cost-Effective Maintenance') before an oil change. Certainly the oil was even blacker than usual when drained and the flushing oil was also very black (although I didn't have the 'sludge' that many people talk about - probably more common with naturally aspirated diesels which run dirtier). The other thing I've noticed is that my oil pressure has improved, the oil has stayed very clean and there's not as much smoke on start-up. HOWEVER, the motor sounds rattlier than ever (maybe the soot deposits were having a sound-deadening effect!) and if anything I've lost power...I'm now at the stage where I can barely hold 5th. I'm wondering if the CEM has dislodged deposits that are somehow blocking oil channels at the turbo? Also a mechanic commented that the turbo was very small - has anyone upgraded theirs...if so, would appreciate details...and any advice on what might be responsible for the continuing decline in power and roughness/noisiness of the motor (which doesn't use any oil btw).

    Thanks

they warn you that this may happen and that you should inspect the oil lines after the inital clean out. you havent done so by the sounds of it?

cant help with that one, but i would be very wary of loading the motor any more than it is, they are heavily stressed in standard form

my motor is quite harsh they tell me and has been since i bought it. i have used cem and have obtained very good results including increased power etc etc.

i got a very marginal increase in noise but thought it was a clearer sharper noise so imho a good result.

the problem could be as you say, increased oil presure because of a restriction, dropping overall oil flow rates and bits are wearing asap.

the noise could be valve train related. have you checked tappet clearances lately or inspected the tapperts and rockers for wear, we have had at least one user here have problems related to them?

thanks incisor. The oil that came out after treatment was very free-flowing, so I'm hoping nothing has been blocked. To check the lines at the turbo, would I need to have the motor running when I disconnect them, or should oil flow with gravity from them if not blocked?

I had my turbo upgraded by a (now defunct) outfit in Perth for around $1500. They basically re-engineered the housing to fit a larger impeller (easy to do on the 200TDI, as the housing is separate from the manifold). After resetting the fuel delivery, max boost is set to around 20psi (at the intake manifold), although one could go higher. I've been running this setup for over 5 years now, without a problem (280,000kms).

First thing I'd be doing is cleaning the intercooler and checking boost pressure. The factory turbo will happily run these engines at around 15psi. I dont like flushing engine.

I flushed my old Disco with CEM. No difference.
Id say you might have a blockage or a tune is required.

Ahhh... You'll probably find that the internals of your fuel pump has seized. Those are classic symptoms... i.e. loss of top end power.

The mechanism that adjusts the fuel based upon turbo boost does have a tendancy to seize. It's an easy job to do too.

one of the amazing results after the CEM flush is virtually zero diesel smoke on start-up - even first thing in the morning - I don't really understand how an oil flush can overcome the fact that diesel is going to produce soot until the motor is running smoothly and at operating temp...

Anyone have any idea what the base is for CEM's engine flush ?

is it solvent based, or something else ?

    Hi Rick
From the smell I would guess its a solvent base. The stuff works wonders on my Mitsi Trytoo diesel.
