    Td5 Oil filter.

    I had the same trouble that everyone else has with that filter. It's obviously put on by some moron while the engine is being built and long before everything else is put in the way!
    I used an old piston ring compressor with a small handle thing, put sandpaper inside to provide grip and with much cursing put pressure on and it gradually turned.
    I also removed the pipe to the turbo to give more room. As my Defender is under warranty and the Main Stealer doesn't believe in changing filters (or doing much else), I used to supply my own and state quite forcibly that I wanted it changed but they still rang me at work to advise that LR said it was un-necessary to change it!
    I no longer pay them around $400 just to change the oil. They only did that because it was visible if you checked the dipstick!
    New oil needs a new filter as far as I'm concerned.

    I was actually going to post on this exact topic (well close anyway) and someone asked it for me.

    I'm not into over servicing, but our Defender has done 7.5k now, and some of them have been pretty hard going [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img] So, expecially being a new car I thought I better treat it.

    I have the oil, and the filter, but not the centrifuge rotor. Should I change that as well?

    How many times has this forum looked at this subject!!!!

    I don't care what ANY stealer says, a diesel engine creates carbon grit that wears cylinder bores. If you change oil, change the bloody filter!!! Change the oil every 5000k's (and Filter(s)) and the engine will last for years. Some may say this is an unessesary expense and is overservicing, if the motor lasts 500000k's plus than it is very cheap preventative maintenance. Learn to do it yourself, it saves money and gives you time away from the handbrake!!!!!
    I have adopted this for years on the farm trucks and tractors, we have a 52 year old tractor that still does good work all because of PREVENTATIVE maintenance, there is also a 555 V8 cummins diesel in the Acco that has done over 1.5 million k's and is still going strong, oil and filters changed every 5k's.
    Just do it!!!! Its fun anyway!!!!!

    <span style="color:green">the centrifugal filter is not meant to be replaced at every service....

    i would(and do) replace the spin on type every oil change....this has a paper element which collects the dirt from the oil and becomes clogged...



    the centrifugal removes all the dirt from the oil by (as the name suggests) using centrifugal force to force the dirt to the sides of the filter and allowing the oil to run out....(similar to the spin cycle in a washing machine)....</span>

    Zook my man you are absolutely correct on the centrifical filter. This is one of the best features of the TD5 motor. I reckon all diesels should have these!!!
    There are some aftermarket centrifical filters available for large truck motors, they are too big too fit under the bonnet of my disco or I would have one.
    It has also been asked which is the best oil to use, again I still say, keep within the manufacturers spec for viscosity and rating and change it often, like every 5k's as well as the NORMAL filter.
    I suspect that the long service interval stated by some manufacturers ( 20k between oil drinks) could be a ploy to get more engine rebuilds from neglectful owners. In fairness though, modern motors appear to be able to do this when they run on petrol, diesels are different and need a different approach.
    I will now get off my high horse having said my piece............how many cans do ya reckon this will open......................

    All the advice I'm getting is a 10k service interval (thats almost every 8 weeks for me by the way!). So is Zook saying that the centrifugal can go 20k?

    20,000 klm for the rotor.
    60,000 klm for the normal filter.

    I have read heaps about the TD5,many say use the synthetic oils and they will last,run on normal mineral oils there ends up with a motor that wont do a big number of Ks.
    I had a pretty long chat with 2 oil dealers at car show in Perth a couple of weeks ago.One was a Redline oils and the other Moutul,after getting over the "our oil is the greatest speil" and asking a few questions both came up with the same answer.
    Full synthetic oils have a high level of Boron,which attracts and encapsulates the carbon produced enaballing the carbon,which is what causes all the wear in a motor,to be easilly filtered out.Apparently normal mineral oils cant do this.
    I told them that my 197000km TD5 has clean oil 2000ks since its last service.Both wernt surprised and both commented that that centrifuge(yes they both new their stuff) combined with the synthetic oil used since new is the reason for such a clean oil system.
    Ive changed oil on many diesels,trucks tractors stationary motors,and plenty of petrol motors and never seen a diesel motor yet that can keep its oil as clean as it goes in.
    In summing up,10000ks with synthetics and filters should be OK,5000 if you use mineral oils could be better.
    Look up "Landyspares" on Ebay,they sell a TD5 service kit for $99,it includes fuel air centrfuge and oil filters.
