Hi Brett
Have you or anyone else checked the pump timing?
Cheers
Michael.
Since having my fuel injection pump serviced and refurbished, the car just hasn't been running quite right. At first I thought that perhaps the FIP just needed a tweak, and was going to take it back down to the mechanic, but now I'm not so sure. Prior to the FIP getting done the car drove quite well, even though the FIP was leaking like a sieve.
Here are the symptoms/observations/things I have checked :
Lacking in power, especially 1st gear and at gear changes, and worse when engine is cold,
Blowing more smoke than usual, smoke seems to be a whitish/grey in colour.
Have oil weeping from front of turbo, and it is not coming from the oil feed line - ie getting pulled through the turbo fan.
Oil in turbo hoses, seems to be a bit more than usual.
Rocker cover now weeping oil when it wasn't before.
Breather pipe not blocked but is weeping oil from somewhere, as are the hoses on the cyclone. Has always done this but seems to be worse. Cyclone only 6 months old.
Turbo fan - can be spun by hand with minimal resistance, no push/pull or sideways movement on fan itself. Turbo only 2 years old.
Turbo still boosting up to 15/16psi.
All hoses and clamps tight.
No oil in air filter.
All fluid levels good.
Haven't had a chance to check the intercooler yet but it was cleaned out about 12 months ago. Expect there will be oil in it.
All turbo hoses are about 12 months old and still seem to be in good condition - no splits, delaminating etc.
Anyone have any suggestions?![]()
I'm sure some of the sypmtoms are not related to the problems of lacking power and excessive smoke, but just seems a coincidence that these leaks have only occurred or got worse AFTER the FIP was serviced. Is it something to do with the oil pressure, and do I need to/should I fit a provent - will this make any difference?
Dave (Blknight) suggested in one of my earlier posts that it could be the turbo compensation pin in the FIP - does this still sound like the possible culprit? Is this somethng I can check myself or is it best left to an expert? Have the car booked in at the mechanics where the work was done for this coming Monday, but being short on funds I will probably have to cancel that. Would really like to be able to fix this myself if possible.
Sorry for all the questions but this is doing my head in, not to mention the disapproving frowns and comments from SWMBO....
Thanks in advance

No I haven't, but the guy who did the work seemed to think it was all good, I did ask if the timing could be slightly out but he was adamant that it wasn't.
Doesn't mean it isnt though![]()
So driving home from work just now, and I hear a clicking sound that wasn't there this morning. Get home and pop the bonnet, and the lever on the fuel lift pump is flapping up and down. Wasn't doing that yesterday when I was checking things, and pretty sure it wasn't doing it this morning. So...is the fuel lift pump knackered, and would this explain the problems I have been having of late? Only fitted a new lift pump 3 months ago or so...
Was of the understanding (probably wrongly) that on the 300tdi the lift pump doesn't actually do much and isn't essential with the bosch VE FIP, but if it was knackered, does that explain why the car is lacking power in 1st gear and especially when cold?
The motor will run without the lift pump, but not 100% swap it out and see what happens. As for being 3 months old - unlucky, got a dud, who knows.
The grey smoke is your main concern. White/grey is usually unburnt diesel. Who installed the pump after the reco, has the timing belt been checked since.

Timing is retarded.
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Just swapped out the lift pump and she seems to be running better, got the day off work tomorrow so will take her for a run and get a better idea. Still blowing a fair bit of smoke though....wondering if this oil getting pushed through the turbo and burning up in the exhaust??
Will give another update after I take her on a decent drive

All ears if you want to elaborate. Any advice I haven't heeded has been purely because I am broke and trying to fix it myself, but have always appreciated the advice. If I knew how to muck about with the injection pump without screwing things up I would...

And timing belt is relatively new, when the injection pump was removed mechanic told me it was still in good nick, it has only done 20k. No, I haven't checked it myself, because I have never done it before and dont know how. Have the kit for it (except a viscous fan spanner) but as yet dont have the confidence to tackle it.
That said I have been able to do the clutch, front diff, rear shocks, radiator, alternator, ignition, turbo, lift pump, vacuum pump and several other bits and pieces myself. No mug on the tools but smart enough to know I am no mechanic either. Hence my questions.
