    300 tDi big end bearings

    Hi All,

Decided to check my big end and main bearings since I had the sump off in order to try to reseal it. Sump was ****ing oil all around despite massive amounts of sealant applied by someone previously. By the amount of effort required to take it off without damaging sump lip, it looks like there was 30% of superglue mixed in with sealant . Once off, I noticed it was already damaged and bent out of shape. Screwdriver marks all over the lip .

Anyway, to the point. On the pic is #1 big end bearing, I didn't attach other 3 because they are pretty much identical. What are your taughts for wear on 365000km engine and pattern of wear? Not sure if these are originals tough. Obviously they are due for replacement, but is this normal wear pattern? Given that bottom one looks as nearly as new, Is there any benefit of swapping top and bottom halves in theory? Part number stamped on them is ERC8841, does anyone have details on this? Didn't find anything on them.

Also attached is bottom half of my #2 main bearing. Looks pretty good to me. Any comments?

Crank surfaces are smooth as, no marks whatsoever!!!

    Thanx for your taughts!!!

    Cheers,

    Dragan

They look pretty good, in a pinch you could do the shell roll but I dont usually recomend it.

After you straighten out the sump for reinstall, you can try a sump gasket, even though they can be installed without. I find that at least with a gasket the paper will be sacrificial when removing again, saves the sump from deforming when the sealant sticks too well.

    Bottom end bearings

Hi, for the cost i wouldn't bother with anything else but new ones. those look very good for 350K.

I would use the micrometer to check for ovality of the crank bearings, If they're nor ovaled by more and a few 10t hs of a thou, it' great, it would be very interesting to know. my car has only done about 200,000, so interesting to have an idea what to expect later. cheers simmo
