One wheel is a different - safe or not?

I just bought an old Rangie, for parts, not least of which was the set of Sunraysia wheels with good Cooper S/T's (I've still got the alloy rims and want to switch to steel).

However, as I was fitting them, I noticed one tyre more recessed than the other three. All the tyres are the same (31x10.5x16) but it turns out the offset on one rim is about 15mm less than the rest.
Can't find markings to say what the actual spec is.

I presume the steering would be thrown off if this one was on the front, but is it safe to carry it as a spare. I guess if I have a puncture on the front, I could swap them around to make sure the odd-one-out goes to the back?

Or should you never mix them?

    Thanks

I have had the same problem, with a previous Land Rover and with the off road set of wheels on my current one. It would be no different to a Spacesaver tyre (maybe less) many cars come with, as long as you don't go really fast and are aware of a different feel, and yes it would probably be better on the rear, but could be put on the front for a short distance. If off road be careful not only with touching at full lock but full articulation, it might touch the body.

You should be able to pick up a Dynamic rim to match the other three, they can be ordered with different offsets, depending where you buy. Are you sure they are 16's? 31x10.5 is a common size for 15's, specailly on old Rangies. Its the size I have on my D1, also off an older RR.

Thanks guys - I did think about the thinner spare wheels, which is why I though it would be fine as a temporary spare. I'd like to get two spares so will start looking around.

I checked - right enough - 15 inch. I just assumed it was the same as the original alloy wheels on my "92 Rangie - which are 16 inch.
