    Power Steering Fluid

    CJ has just purchased a power steering unit from a wrecked Td5 Defender to replace the one on his County. (Those of you who have been to LVS will know the donor xtreme :wink: )

    John reckons that the fluid was more like hydraulic fluid than the usual Dextron III stuff.

    What is the standard spec for this unit?

    As disconut said, Caltex/Texaco Cold Climate PAS 14315 is the factory fill (green colour)
    It's a very good power steering fluid, and I've found it much better than a (mineral) Dex III ATF (Fuchs ATF 4000)

    Currently running Castrol Transmax Z (full synth, Dex III ATF, also green in colour) which has given me better steering feel than the Fuchs fluid had (was lighter), but I reckon the Caltex fluid is better in really cold weather, but I suspect the Transmax Z will be much better off road in high load/temp situations. The Castrol fluid was recommended to me by a fleet truck operator who reckons it's unbeatable in large truck and bus auto trannys.

    I ran Transmax Z in my DII auto and power steering. It made a big difference to the auto. Very smooth.
