    What is this sound?

    Hi all!!!

    Can anyone identify this screeching / metallic tapping noise coming from my 300 tDi? It appears only when engine warm and idling or under power (accelerating). Maintaining speed sound either goes away or I can't hear it. It is not aux belt nor aircon belt. It seems to come from the front part of the engine, but can't confirm 100%. When using stethoscope to check, it is most distinguished (but not loudest) on the cylinder head on the injectors side.

    It appeared after I took the head off to replace the gasket. Other work also included lapping valves, valve stem seal changes and timing belt change (belt only, not whole kit), crankshaft front seal change.

    Can it be valves hitting pistons?

    the first 3 listens I thought were just headphone static--

    Hi,

    Not the taps. Don't know where they came from. They are not on original recording. It's the continuous sound of metallic tapping or screeching. Don't know how else to describe it. It is not very distinguished on the recording, but I can't make it stand out more with all other engine noises.

    Here is another recording. There is distingushed pulse of it on the 4 seconds mark.

    It might be the start of the belt tensioner starting to give up, but it's not much of a sound at the moment.
