Diff locker / Tyres

Does anyone have any views on the fitting of a diff locker to a Disco. I am looking seriously at an ARB air operated diff locker for the rear diff. Any views anyone???

Has anyone any experience with Coopers ATR tyres??

Any info welcome.

depends on which model Disco.

Later Discos 924 spline axles) ARB air lockers are fine, but you still need to upgrade you axles.

Maxi Drives while a bit exxy pricewise ($1960 pre-fitment, then allow on average $600 for fitting unless you are keen to DIY). But the entire kit is complete and no custom made axles needed to be sourced.

Downside of maxi's is the locking system is a bit of a dinasour (seperate locking dog mounted top the diff houising) so engaging is a bit slower than ARB's for example. But it's bonus is that the unit is vaccum operated so there's no problem if you air compressor bombs out on you, as log as the engine is going you're fine

There are pro's and con's for both, but I perfer maxi's manily due to the strength and parts are easily sourced (MD is QLD based).

Regards to tyres, I'm not a big fan of Coopers, they seem to stake easily (ST's do from what I have seen on trips). The newer STT Coopers are suppoed to be better but time will tell. I find for most off-road the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's do the job well (mud is a bit dissapointing but there not designed to be mud pluggers), noise is acceptable and vibration is minimal for the tread style.

Anyway, best of luck with it.Hopefully whichever way you gio you will be pleased with

I can't see a problem with going with the ARB locker as long as you have/get 24 spline axles.

With the tyres you are talking about there is no need to upgrade standard 24 spline axles. I ran ARB locker fron and rear in my Disco 2 with 33" JT2's and standard axles without a probem. But whenever you get the chance upgrade to maxidrive axles just in case.

I now have a maxidrive locker in the rear and ARB locker in the front of the Rangie. I have to say I got the maxidrive because everyone said "they were the toughest". However I have had nothing but problems so far with the locking mechanism. It often get's stuck on (it requires regular greasing which is a pain to access) and I am now on my 2nd switch.
I like the air locker because 110psi of air is a lot more powerfull/positive than a vacuum.

I've had my rear maxi for 7 years and it's only had issues til now. The rear was off another Rangie I used to own and it was fitted to that particular Rangie in '92, so it's been good for 13 years, but I agree the locking mechanism is a pain.Never had to grease the locking dog though. I had a front one fitted this year, trouble-free to date.

ARB's have this advantage, but then you do o-rings every 50K and that needs to be replaced. I had an ARB locker in the rear of Aquarangie and it started to leak after 20K of use 8O

So it's 6 or 1/2 dozen of the other I guess, but both MD and ARB good units.

Thanks all for your knowledgable comments. I think my disco has 24 splines (97 model), but will look into upgrading the axles as specified.

Thanks again, it's good to know advice is readily available out there.
