Turbo Rev range TD5

Did you have a look inside the turbo when it was off, to see it there is any damage to the compressor wheel?
It only takes 5 mins to whip the compressor housing off, a few bolts and a tap with a rubber mallet is all it takes - as you know it takes a bit of time to have the turbo off the motor first tho.

As far as the different core in original housings goes, I cant help you there. There has been a lot of talk about TD5 turbos, so the info you are looking for is there somewhere.

I did not look as was scared by taking it apart I would put it out of balance. Guessing it would be a good idea to take off and have a look as you suggest before ordering a new core. I have posted separately in case I do need a new core. I will take the turbo off at the weekend and report back. Thanks Simon.

Taking the housing off will not harm it. Just be careful removing it and of course mark or note some alignment mark between the housing and the core.

I only suggest it to be sure the core needs replacing.

Dont forget to have a good look at the housing too, if the sensor fragment gouged it then the airflow will not be as it should. The new core will work but not as good as it should.

No visible damage. How is it to turn the wheels by hand, there should be little to no resistance and if you give it a spin with your fingers it should continue to spin for a few turns (may have a bent shaft) is the markings in the backing plate even or is it heavier on one side. A bit of a spray with brake clean, taking care not to get it into the oil passages or wastegate actuator, will take that soot right off the turbine wheel and give you a better look.

The compressor housing comes off just the same as the turbine housing. Get a closer look at the face between that tensioning nut and the compressor wheel to see if it has spun on the shaft (don't undo that nut, that is the one that will upset the balance)
Is it me or does the compressor wheel look awfully close to the housing in the bottom of that pic?
