    Cost of Head clean up?

    Hi guys.
    Just after some collective wisdom.
Went in to a local cylinder head shop and asked for a quote for a pressure test, valve grind, manifold skim and a skim of the head itself.
Quote came back at $790 which I was surprised at.
Does this sound reasonable, or should I try elsewhere?

    ive overestimated
    pressure test $100
    valve grind $200
    manifold skim $200
skim of the head itself $200

    yeah, 790$ does seem steep

Not a TD5, but I had 2 V8 heads done, included new valves seats and that cost me $780, I was told but others that it was too dear, but it depends on the quality of the work.
Some just pressure test, skim and reassemble and call that a reco.

Obviously I'll ask for the crack and pressure test first

Muppet, if it's C&G that you are dealing with, they have a very good name. I used them to test a 300tdi head and they were quite good. I have used before when the dad was still running the shop over 35 years ago and they had a good rep then too,

seems we do a lot of what I think is unnecessary stuff.

if a head is machined flat and the valves are seated there is nothing else needs be done.

    it's just makin' bacon.

Tom, it was C&G, and I was impressed that they knew what I meant when I said it was for a Td5, so I'm glad to hear that you've had no issues.

Dennis, what exactly is unnecessary? Not like I'm after a port and polish.
I want to know that the head itself is up to standard, I want it and my warped exhaust manifold to be skimmed flat, and at 270k I'm taking Justin Coopers advise that it would benefit from a valve grind
    Simple really.

Not a TD5, but I just paid $400 for my 300TDi skim, pressure check, hardness check and valve reseat.
