Yes annoyingly. I am taking it for an Landy specialist before the next service and get a letter which I an happy to pay for stating it is not normal. Then I will hand the letter to the service department when I get me service. Hopefully they will give up in the "its normal" rubbish.

Believe it or not,the Series Landies have them too
Inspect your "driven members" on the ends of the rear axles for spline wear for starters.

If you got to the Pinnacles , in the Defender section there are so many complaints about this problem it is beyond ridiculous.

Yes I love my Defender, but I hate the gear change with a passion.

So did anyone ever determine where does that slop come from exactly and why it isn't solveable?

I've been driving all sorts of cars for a long time,.......but I can't get rid of the "clunk" either.
The thing is, you try something from say 2nd to 3rd, & all is good, but then ya shift from say 4th to 5th doing the same, & guess what,..."CLUNK".
Having just had the intermediate shaft replaced, I'm very conscious of "Clunking", but try as I may, I just can't avoid it! (MY13 Def.)

What annoys me about the clunk is why? I have heard BS like Land Rover is permanent 4x4 so it has lost of take up and gears, hence the clunk, but this is hog wash. Other permanent 4x4's dont have this problem. I have owned a Lada Niva for example NO CLUNK and this is permanent 4x4 and it is cheap Russian junk yet no clunk, if Lada can do it why not Land Rover?

I'm convinced that on my Disco it comes from LT230. Hi/low range selector ring has dog teeth that mesh very loose with hi or low gears, this was apparently made loose on purpose for easier selection. Same on center diff locking. Even tough I've been told that it's not it.

And I wouldn't call NIVA junk. It may be cheap with weak motor, but surely not junk, for what it costs it is damn capable!!!

I actually loved mine to bits apart the electrics. Cheap as chips with many corners cut, switches and fuse board was a joke, the rubber used for the stock hoses was rubbish, but with new fuses, a few after market switches and a new fuse board and the Lada was unstoppable. The finish was not exactly good actually very bad and they rusted hence my junk remark, but as a 4x4 they will go places few cars can, even a Landy (Flame suit on).
