The finish was not exactly good actually very bad and they rusted hence my junk remark, but as a 4x4 they will go places few cars can, even a Landy (Flame suit on).

That's what I'm talking about. It was made cheap for ordinary folk. Bare essentials. But value for money was good. I can see myself doing one up in the future. Electrics first

In Europe you could even get the late ones with a diesel engine, I would not mind one of those to play with

btw it's not only a LR Defender problem.

My ranger has same engine combo and I have trouble with smooth upshifts.

Hmm yes and no, Fiat was involved with the Russians and the early Lada's had a Fiat motor, but I dont think Lada had anything to do with Fiat later on.

I drove a Ranger recently it was super smooth (not saying your isnt), but clearly not all Rangers and not all Defenders have the problem. Land Rover though should be ashamed that a budget car like a Lada got it right and Defenders clunk and Land Rover have had a lot of years to practice getting it right. Sad that they couldnt make a trouble free Defender even by the last of the 2015 models. I still love mine to bits, but this dodgy shift has really taken the shine off an otherwise great car.

So where is the clunk? If the 2.2 has the issue and the 3.2 does not (not sure what I drove) then the clunks should be able to be pin pointed and fixed, hopefully.
