I think the picture I'm getting from the other responses is that I could attach the power leads to the battery and just wire in the rest to the existing highbeam wires. That way not needing any switches.

1. I don't know about late Defenders, but early 110s did not use headlight relays, and running extra current through the switch is definitely not a good idea. In any case, for best light use a relay and the shortest possible wiring from the alternator, as this is where the highest voltage is.
2. In at least some states, it is a legal requirement to be able to use high beam without the spots
