    fitting spotties to ya defender

    I've got a set of spotties but not sure if I should attach myself or leave it to the professionals. I've got the TD5 fender and little knowledge of elctrics.

    Any help would be great.

    If you want to do a simple installation where you simply power a relay from the existing hi-beam circuit it's only a couple of hour job. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] That's what I did because I was running out of time before my holiday. 8O
    It is quite neat and works well [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

    However there are a number of people on here that have made quite complex but technically excellent solutions that are better. They allow you to fit bigger bulbs and so on to the mainbeam headlights. Do a search and you should find the thread [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

    Did same myself. Used the High beam wire (cut) to power a relay and then ran wires driect from battery to relay and onto lights. Easy. Google search will find you a wiring diagram.

    I actually ran the power from the back of the alternator. Very tidy installation if I say so myself [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

    Post studying those diagrams, would there be an easier way of just connecting the headlights to the high beam switch? I think the picture I'm getting from the other responses is that I could attach the power leads to the battery and just wire in the rest to the existing highbeam wires. That way not needing any switches.

    thoughts anyone??

    1. I don't know about late Defenders, but early 110s did not use headlight relays, and running extra current through the switch is definitely not a good idea. In any case, for best light use a relay and the shortest possible wiring from the alternator, as this is where the highest voltage is.
    2. In at least some states, it is a legal requirement to be able to use high beam without the spots

    As I understand it in Vic they have to be switched by the high beam? So if you switch the relay using the existing high beam circuit then you just need tyo power the relay and run it to the lights?

    I think you should perhaps leave it to the professionals, see how its done and then try it on your next vehicle.
    You will need a switch, relay and fuses to be fitted.
    If you do not feel confident, then my advice is don't attempt to do it.
    Discretion is the better part of valor.
