How good is your Air filter ?

This is a very good read about how different air filters were tested to
conform to ISO 5011 (Din) standard.

Some of the filters tested are available in australia
One brand is an after market that claims to be effective when it's oiled
Have a read of the results 8O

I am so glad I have not gone for the super duper overpriced spray oil on my air flow meter aftermarket filter. It scores very poorly. "Snake oil" as somebody quotes reguarly.

yes, Spicer performed a very comprehensive test, but remember that those results don't automatically transfer to another vehicle with a different air filter.
eg, the Baldwin or Donaldson could test better than the AC in another application. Filter manufacturers have a range of media to choose from, and use what they deem to be the best compromise between flow vs filtration in most applications. Baldwin in the US once told me they have over 60 different medias to choose from.

Also remember that no manufacturer makes all their own filters. They tend to specailise in their market niche, eg. Baldwin, Fleetguard and Donaldson in heavy vehicles, AC-Delco mainly GM and popular US Ford applications, then the rest of their range they source from the opposition.
In oil filters I've bought Wix that were actually Indonesian made Sakura's, Purolators made in Korea, etc.
R & D is ongoing, and Donaldson and Mann-Hummel are developing nano fibre filters to take air filtration to the next level.

What Spicers test does do is provide a relative indication of how a paper/cellulose OEM type filter performs compared to some very popular aftermarket 'high flow' types.
That is its real benefit.
