    The Cause

    Hello All,

To transfer the duplicate copies into something more useful ... Here is a UK based thread on using the same Mercedes OM606 into a Land Rover. Yes the engines are hard to come by in Australia.

    The Cause

    Hello All,

These two links are what started me off I like Mercedes Diesels .... I like Land Rovers

The first link is for a Series III and the second link is the one that sucked me in. However, they started off with a Defender 90 inch chassis to which they added Series III panels.

I have a choice of four cylinder and six cylinder Series III chassis and quite a number of panels available if I went down the route of the first link from Youtube

The Advantage of the second link is that being a Defender it has coil springs and disc brakes. I would go the 110 inch option though.

Yes the Series III chassis can be converted to both coil springs, disc brakes however - why not give yourself a head start and begin with a chassis that has both elements?

Did Defenders have power steering as well - another advantage over the Series III - yes they can be converted as well.

Just means it opens the door up to Defender type information - a bit like a Pandora's box.

Yes, it would be a challenge according to a recent seller only 20 OM606 diesels came into Australia in the E series Mercedes. One of which was a complete - currently registered car which sold on Carsales last week for $5000.

Yes I am insane ... I like Land Rovers bah hawww haaa and Mercedes ... I prefer tray back utes over station wagons or hard tops - what is a deluded fellow such as myself supposed to do? Why not combine the three maniacal laugh x 2.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Was this item in the markets the reason you were asking Lionel?

    G'day Dave,

I did see that link on AULRO. I did not follow all the pages of the thread though! I saw the conversion clip into a Discovery with the five cylinder motor.

Then I searched to see if a six cylinder OM606 conversion had occurred in a Series III Land Rover. My first port of call after finding the two links I posted earlier was a visit to Carsales to see if the OM606 powered cars were available in Australia. Tick ... only one though

Then I looked at the five cylinder versions and the pre-OM606 diesel engines. For the five cylinders I found cars like these two both are too good to sacrifice for just sourcing the engine http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-4038019/?Cr=7 and http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...3992034/?Cr=10

Yes I do realise there have been some very good five cylinder motors. However, I seem to have a bias towards engine cylinders coming in sets of pairs.

The earlier version of the six cylinder diesel before the OM606 these range from $1500 http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-4050139/?Cr=0 upward to the $5k mark too http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Mercedes-Benz-300D-1987/SSE-AD-4006464/?Cr=2.

The OM606 E Class has since sold - not to me. Again too good to wreck just for an engine.

P.S. I wonder if Steu is now the proud owner of the car I found on Carsales with the OM606? Accessed July 4th 2016 from http://www.aulro.com/afvb/complete-e...ml#post2542358. A later message suggests that Steu was going to import the engine - why do so if one was sitting there for sale on Carsales - just with a car attached! I have a good friend who is a Mercedes fan (to say the least) who was also involved in the car industry importing front half-cuts into Australia - admittedly these were Japanese sports cars, though not Mercedes. So the knowledge base is not too far away to access.

    Kind Regards

    Hello All,

There is also the factors of time and mathematics. In one timeframe a chassis is obtained, an OM606 engine, the gearbox and transfer case. Rebuild kits to be put through the various items. Queensland Department of Transport to negotiate. This all costs money too.

Meanwhile running along on a parallel time frame the price of Perenties are coming down slowly and this seems to be happening at a regular pace now.

There has to be a point where one option becomes more advantageous than another. As in pay someone for an already registered vehicle that has been in a proven configuration for years.

Not as much fun or a challenge as a kit type project though. It all just research at this stage - things to complete first and other things to obtain...

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
